BILLINGS, Mont. - While it required a little more effort than normal, the Carroll Volleyball team walked out of Wednesday night's matchup at Rocky with a three set sweep inside the Fortin Education Center.
For the first time since 2016, the (RV) Fighting Saints (13-9, 8-6) picked up a season sweep over the Battlin' Bears (1-18, 0-14), winning all six sets in the two matches.
Entering the night on a three-game skid, the Saints were in need of a quick start to get things back on track against the Bears. A 7-0 run in the early stages of the opening frame was just what Carroll needed, as
McKaila Balcom (Pasco, Wash. / JR) led the Saints with five kills to help them to a 25-20 win.
The three set sweep wasn't a cake-walk by any means for the Saints, who had their mettle tested in a marathon second set. Although Carroll hit .250 for the second-consecutive frame, neither side could find a way to pull away. The Saints held the frame's largest lead at just three points, and found a way to outlast Rocky in the end, 29-27.
In the third set, Carroll jumped out to their largest lead in the last four seasons. The Saints opened the frame on a 20-3 run, before Rocky climbed out of the large hole. The cushion was more than enough, as Carroll coasted to a 25-14 win to take the match.
Balcom was joined for the game-high in kills by
Sidney Gulick (Kalispell, Mont. / SR), as the pair finished with 13 each.
Jansyn Carrizales (Sunnyside, Wash. / JR) and
Sofia Kimmel (Bozeman, Mont. / FR) each had match-high totals as well, leading all players with 22 assists and 31 digs, respectively.
The Saints will now turn their attention towards a Saturday evening showdown with No. 7 Bellevue at 6:30 p.m. inside the Carroll College PE Center.
