GREAT FALLS, Mont. - The Carroll College Men's Basketball team saw their winning streak come to a close on Saturday afternoon, dropping their second game of the season to Providence, 81-74 at the McLaughlin Center.
The Fighting Saints (8-12, 3-4) dug themselves an early hole that they were never able to recover from, falling to the Argos in a competitive mid-season Frontier bout.
Both the Saints and Argos traded buckets for the first five minutes of the game, with neither creating much separation. A quick 9-0 run for Providence near the midway point of the half, aided by Carroll turnovers and fouls, would give the Argos an 11-point lead, and by the eight-minute mark, Providence stretched it out to 14.
With 30 seconds remaining before the break,
Isaiah Crane (Portland, Ore. / R-FR), the league's leading scorer, would bring Carroll within two points on a shot in the paint, but a three-pointer from Mike Wright Jr. right at the end of the half would give Providence a five-point advantage at the break, 42-37.
Crane, along with fellow Jesuit HS-product
James Lang (Portland, Ore. / R-JR) would each post double-digit points in the first half, with 11 and 10, respectively.
The Argos were led by a perfect shooting half from Antoine Boyd Jr., who scored 15 points while going 6-6 from the floor and 3-3 from deep.
The Providence lead would hover around five points for the majority of the second half, but a
Kellen Harrison (Bozeman, Mont. / FR) three would cut the lead to just one point with a little over four minutes remaining.
Carroll would be unable to regain the the from that point on, as Nikolajs Atanasovs took control down the stretch. The Saints had no answer for the Providence big, and the Argos would hit their shots at the stripe over the final couple minutes to preserve their second win of the series.
Crane was outstanding again, leading all players with 25 points on a 10-17 shooting effort.
Lang finished with 12 points, while Harrison again provided a spark off the bench with 10 points, five rebounds, a pair of assists and a pair of steals.
The Argos were led by Boyd Jr.'s 23 points, and Jamil Bowles 19 points and nine rebounds.
The Saints will look to get back in the win column on Thursday, as they host No. 11 Montana Tech at the PE Center at 7 p.m.
