HELENA, Mont. - The Carroll College Softball team fell 11-2 in a six inning makeup game to the College of Idaho on Saturday at Centennial Park in Helena.
The Fighting Saints (17-19-1, 10-11) battled for four innings, but saw the game get out of hand in the fifth as the Yotes (26-10, 16-3) pulled away for a run-rule win.
The game was originally scheduled last month in Caldwell, Idaho, but was forced to be played at a later date due to weather. As such, the Saints played as the visitor on their home turf.
Carroll got on top early, as
Morgan Sunchild (Great Falls, Mont. / SO) brought home Bookelynn Jackson (Keizer, Ore. / FR) to give the Saints a 1-0 lead in the top of the first.
Madelyn Powell tied the game for the Yotes in the bottom half of the frame with an RBI single, before Lexi Navarette added a two-RBI triple to give C of I the 3-1 lead after one.
Sunchild's next at-bat again scored one for the Saints. An error allowed her to reach safely and Jackson to score all the way from second to pull the Saints within one, 3-2, in the third
The Yotes broke the game open in the fifth inning, finally catching up with
Kennedy Venner (Billings, Mont. / SO), making her third start in as many days. The Yotes scored six runs in the fifth, capped by a two-run home run by Kaylee MacDannald to go on top 9-2.
Another C of I error would lead to a run for the Saints in the top of the sixth, but a Lolo Walker solo shot, and Hallie Holland RBI single in the bottom of the frame would close out the run-rule win for the Yotes, 11-3.
The Saints had their chances, totaling seven hits in the game, including a 2-3 performance from
Sammie Labrum (Kalispell, Mont. / SO), but the Yotes would double the output with 14 hits of their own.
Up next, the Saints will head to Missoula for a Tuesday afternoon exhibition doubleheader at NCAA Division I Montana.
