SALEM, Ore. - The Carroll College Softball team capped another stellar weekend with a pair of wins to complete a series sweep of Corban on Saturday afternoon in Salem.
The Fighting Saints (11-12-1, 6-5) made it back-to-back series sweeps, moving above .500 in CCC play for the first time this year following their four wins over the Warroiors (1-25, 0-12).
GAME ONE:
Kennedy Venner (Billings, Mont. / SO) was as solid as can be, rolling to an eight strikeout complete game shutout to nab the third and final conference game of the series.
Alysssa Lybbert (Las Vegas, Nev. / JR) opened the scoring in the first with an RBI single. Two more runs followed in the third inning as both
Morgan Sunchild (Great Falls, Mont. / SO) and
Ellie Koerber (Billings, Mont. / JR) each picked up RBI singles to bring the lead to 3-0 after three.
Kenna Thomas (Belgrade, Mont. / JR) added the next two Carroll runs, one on a sac fly in the fourth, and then with an RBI single in the sixth. An error on a double-steal gave Carroll one more in the seventh, before Sunchild provided the final RBI with a single to wrap things up at 7-0.
GAME TWO:
The scoreboard showed just as many runs for the Saints in the second game, but Corban put their share of runs on as well.
The Warriors were the first to score in the afternoon game, bringing home three runs in the bottom of the second.
Kenna Thomas responded in the third with another RBI single, continuing her good at-bats from the morning game, to cut the lead to 3-1
Corban got the run right back with a solo homer in the bottom of the third before
Morgan Sunchild one-upped the Warrior effort with a two-run blast of her own in the fourth to bring Carroll within one, 3-4.Â
Carlee Smith (Blackfoot, Idaho / FR) matched Sunchild's two run bomb with another two-run shot later in the inning as the Saints vaulted into the lead, 5-3.
Kaitlynn Ayers (Twin Falls, Idaho / SR) got in on the fun in the fifth with an RBI single, then put the game on ice with an RBI double in the seventh.
Abbie Amend (Spokane, Wash. / SO) picked up her third win, striking out nine in the process.
The Saints will return to Helena for a four game series with the University of British Columbia on Thursday and Friday.
