HELENA, Mont. - The first day of the Carroll College Invitational at Bill Roberts Golf Course in Helena featured plenty of excitement, with the Carroll Women right in the hunt for the title, and the Carroll Men playing some of their best golf all year.
The Fighting Saints had a terrific day all across the board. In total, 29 Carroll linksters hit the course this afternoon between the Men's and Women's teams, with plenty of good scores on the board.
The Carroll Women put together a team-round for the record books on Monday.
Celi Chapman (Montana City, Mont. / SO),
Lauren Mayala (Billings, Mont. / FR),
Stella Claridge (Kalispell, Mont. / JR), and
Ellie Stastny (Murtaugh, Idaho / FR) combined for a program-record 309 (+21) on their home course this afternoon.
The outstanding round saw three players post scores in the 70's; Chapman (75, +3), Mayala (76, +4), and Claridge (77, +5). Both the Stastny twins Ellie and Alli (Murtaugh, Idaho / FR) were not far off the pace either, posting rounds of 81 (+9), and 83 (+11), respectively.
Chapman, Mayala, and Claridge currently sit No. 3, 4, and 5 on the individual leaderboard, with the Stastny's at No. 15 and 16.
The hot start to the tournament sees the Carroll Women trailing No. 22 Rocky Mountain College (305, +17), by just four shots heading into tomorrow's final round.
Lindsay Cook (Bozeman, Mont. / FR) is currently No. 11 in the individual competition, firing an impressive opening round 78 (+6) as the lead player on the Carroll (B) team.
The Carroll (B) team is currently fourth in the team competition, with a team score of 338 (+50), ahead of Providence by 16 strokes.
On the Men's side of the action, several Carroll freshmen shot their best rounds as Fighting Saints.
The Men sit at No. 3 in the team competition, with a two-round total of 610 (+34), trailing only Montana Tech and tournament-leader Rocky (553, -23).
JT Slivinski (Montpelier, Idaho / SO) is No. 18 in the individual competition, shooting 72-81 (+9). Freshmen
Kyle Kennah (Laurel, Mont. / FR) and
Tanner Cromwell (Anaconda, Mont. / FR) are both tied at No. 20, with two-round totals of 154 (+10).
Hudson Reinke (Filer, Idaho / FR) is right on their heels at 155 (+11), while
TJ Fierling rounds things out at 156 (+12).
The Men have two additional teams in the tournament this week. Both the Carroll (B) (629, +53) and (C) (647, +71) teams currently lead MSU-Northern, and sit fifth and sixth on the leaderboard.
Jackson Hammond (Scottsdale, Ariz. / SO) is the low-man on any Carroll team after two rounds. The sophomore had a great day, sitting at fourth in the individual competition with rounds of 72, 70 to sit at two-under-par for the event.
