HELENA, Mont. - The No. 6-ranked Carroll Women's Basketball team suffered their first setback in over a month, falling 63-40 to No. 16 Providence on Saturday afternoon at the PE Center.
The Fighting Saints (15-4, 6-1) couldn't seem to get anything going against an Argo team (14-6, 5-2) that had nearly everything working.
A hot shooting Providence team came out of the gates hot, shooting 53 percent from the field (8-15) and opened up an 18-8 advantage after the first quarter.
The 10 point advantage would balloon to 19 points by the halftime break, following a red-hot 83 percent shooting frame for the Argos in the second, and Providence would hold a 40-21 lead at the half.
Carroll went just 9-29 as a team in the first half, and were out-rebounded 20-11.
Coming out of the break, Carroll managed to chip away at the Argo lead. A much-improved Carroll defensive brought the Argos back down to Earth, holding them to just 10 points on 3-14 shooting. However, the Saints were unable to truly capitalize, going just 4-14 in their own right. Providence would lead 50-35 after three.
An ice-cold fourth quarter would negate any chance Carroll had to comeback, with the team going just 2-11 from the floor in the fourth, and Providence would walk out with the 63-40 win.
Carroll shot sub-30 percent from the field as a team for the first time this season (15-54), and the uncharacteristically bad afternoon translated to the first conference loss for the Saints since January of 2023.
Kyndall Keller (Havre, Mont. / SR) scored 13 to lead the Saints, while
Jamie Pickens (Helena, Mont. / GR) and WIlla Albrecht (Billings, Mont. / R-JR) added ten points each, and nine and eight rebounds, respectively.
Providence's Ashlee Maldonado scored 14 points, and Keanna Salave'a added a 10 point, 11 rebound double-double.
Carroll will look to regroup and move on next Thursday in Butte, as they prepare for Montana Tech at 5 p.m.
