Ben Allen Smith

Men's Track and Field | 03/25/23 | 9:07 PM

Missoula, Mont. – Carroll College Track & Field had a strong opening meet at the Al Manuel Invite on Friday March 24 and Saturday March 25.

Garrett Kocab highlighted the men's squad. He won the Discus with an NAIA National Qualifying A Standard, and his mark is currently first in the nation. Kocab also placed 3rd in the Shot Put. Tate Kauffman, Zach Rector, and Brycen Gardner also placed Top 3 in their events. Kauffman won the Triple Jump, Rector placed 3rd in the 5000m, and Gardner placed 3rd in his debut 3000m Steeplechase.

On the women's squad, three individuals placed in the Top 3 in their events. Paige Baxstresser was 1st in the 400m, and Madde Boles was 2nd in the High Jump. Hannah Sempf placed 2nd in her first ever 3000m Steeplechase.

Multiple individuals achieved personal records during the meet. Abigail Peterson threw a record in the Javelin, narrowly missing the NAIA Qualifying B Standard. Kyle Olson and Gabby Rinker ran personal bests in the 800m. Katelyn McKay and Nicole Morgen ran their fastest track times of their careers in the 5000m. For the men, Elias Hill ran a personal record in the 400m and Daniel Koralewski in the 1500m.

"The athletes competed hard and didn't make any excuses despite cool and windy conditions," said Head Coach Harry Clark. "This was a good start to the season, and we're looking forward to having a greater portion of the team in action next week," he added.

The University of Montana hosted the event and competed a large group, winning the meet. For NAIA schools, the Saints placed 2nd as a team on both the men's and women's side following Montana Tech. With a partial roster and fairly limited event entries this weekend, the Saints will look to close the gap as the season progresses.
