Carroll Softball Sweeps Rain-Shortened Series at Corban

SALEM, Ore. - The Carroll College Softball team earned a huge series sweep over Corban, besting the Warriors 6-3 in what would be the final game of the weekend between the two schools.

The Fighting Saints (12-15, 8-7) capped off an impressive weekend in Oregon, beating Corban (7-21, 5-12) on Saturday to complete the three game sweep and bring their conference record over .500.

Carroll took the lead right from the get-go, and never looked back.

Five of the first six Carroll batters secured a hit in the top half of the opening frame. Alyssa Lybbert (Las Vegas, Nev. / SO) singled to drive in the games first run, and more would follow. Kaitlynn Ayers (Twin Falls, Idaho / JR) picked up an RBI double, scoring one. Kati Slater added a sacrifice RBI, before a Kirsten Norris (Phoenix, Ariz. / SR) single brought Ayers in to put Carroll on top 4-0 early.

The Warriors got one run back on the Saints in the second when a wild pitch from Abbie Amend (Spokane, Wash. / FR) allowed Samantha Martinez to score.

The Saints would extend their lead again in the third inning. Annie Davidson (Boise, Idaho / SR) picked up an RBI single, and then a fielding error from the Warriors allowed Norris to cross home plate and give Carroll a 6-1 lead.

Corban would add a run in each of the fourth and fifth innings, but Amend and the rest of the Saints managed to keep the Warriors at bay and close out the 6-3 win.

Amend went all seven innings on the mound, grabbing the win and striking out 10 batters in the process.

The win moves Carroll to 8-7 in Cascade Collegiate Conference play, and more importantly, into sixth-place, the final postseason spot.

Saturday's afternoon game, which would not have affected conference standings, was canceled to due heavy rain.

Carroll will hit the road once again next weekend, heading to La Grande, Ore. for a series with No. 25 Eastern Oregon.
