Carroll Softball Can't Top Owls, Suffer Series Loss

KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. - The Carroll College Softball team were unable to find a win at No. 5 Oregon Tech, dropping two more games on Sunday afternoon in Oregon.

The Fighting Saints (7-12, 3-6) once again could not find an offensive rhythm, losing a pair of Sunday games to No. 5 Oregon Tech (14-5, 7-1) to finish their longest trip of the year empty-handed.

The Saints found themselves in a hole early in the first game of the day. Oregon Tech jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead after one inning. Things would get out of hand early for Carroll as the Owls exploded for six runs in the bottom of the second to extend their lead to 9-0. A two-run home run in the third inning would put the Owls ahead by double-digits, 11-0.

The lone bright spot for the Saints in the early game was a Kaitlynn Ayers (Twin Falls, Idaho / JR) solo home run in the fifth inning, her second of the year.

Oregon Tech went on to win the opener, 15-1.

The second game of the day was much more competitive, and went scoreless through two-and-a-half innings. Oregon Tech would score in the bottom of the third to go in front 1-0, but their lead wouldn't last long.

A Whitney Durocher (Choteau, Mont. / SR) double would score Abby Hanley (Las Vegas, Nev. / SR) to even things up at 1-1.

The game slipped away from Carroll in the bottom half of the fourth inning, however. Oregon Tech would add three additional runs in the inning to jump back in front 4-1. They would add another in the fifth, putting the pressure on Carroll with time running out.

Jessica Nimmo (Las Vegas, Nev. / SR) provided a spark in the sixth inning, her double scored Amber Countryman (Helena, Mont. / SO) and brought the Saints within three runs. The effort would prove to be too little, too late however, and Oregon Tech would hold on for the 5-2 win.

Carroll returns to Helena for what will be their first home action of the year, a welcome change, next weekend when they host Northwest University on Friday and Saturday at Centennial Park.
