SALT LAKE CITY, Utah. - The Carroll Women's Basketball team fell in a one-sided exhibition this afternoon to one of the NCAA Division I's top teams, Utah, 100-44 at the Huntsman Center in Salt Lake City.
The Fighting Saints (6-2) simply weren't able to match the extremely efficient Utes (6-1) offense, from both beyond the arc and in the paint.
Erica Nessan (Spokane, Wash. / GR) scored the game's first points, a beautiful three-pointer off of a screen at the top of the key, but the game would quickly turn in favor of the Utes. The Saints would finish the opening frame just 2-14 from the field, while the Utes jumped out to a 22-8 lead.
Carroll would settle into the game in the second quarter, and gave Utah all they could handle for ten minutes.
Jamie Pickens (Helena, Mont. / GR),
Willa Albrecht (Billings, Mont. / R-JR), and
Addi Ekstrom (Bozeman, Mont. / JR) each scored six points in the second quarter, but Carroll would be unable to trim the lead as Utah shot 90.9 percent from the field as a team (10-11). Utah would lead at the break, 49-28.
The second half would prove to be much of the same, with Carroll scoring just eight points in each quarter. The Saints had their opportunities, but couldn't quite seem to find their rhythm offensively. For the game, Carroll shot just 25 percent from the field against a long and athletic Utes squad.Â
Pickens, Ekstrom, and
Maddie Geritz (Boise, Idaho / GR) all scored eight points to pace the Saints.
Utah had four players finish with double-digit scoring figures, led by reigning Pac-12 Player of the Year, and WBCA All-American Alyssa Pili's 21 points.
Carroll will have a lengthy break before a busy back-half of December. The Saints will host Grace (Ind.) on December 14, before heading to Honolulu for the Hoops in Hawaii tournament December 17-19.
