HELENA, Mont. - The Carroll College Volleyball team will host (RV) Rocky Mountain College tonight at the Carroll College PE Center at 7 p.m. in what will be their first action in nearly two weeks.
The Fighting Saints (5-16, 0-5), coming off of a bye-weekend, will look to refocus and earn their first Frontier Conference victory of the season, and will have an opportunity to do so against the Battlin' Bears (15-9, 3-2) tonight in front of their home crowd.
2023 has been a season of frustration, with injuries at key positions forcing Head Coach Moe Boyle to get creative with her rotation. The down-year also has provided a very young Saints team to gain some invaluable on-court experience, something that is not often the case for a group of underclassmen at Carroll College.
Nine underclassmen are on the Carroll roster at the moment, seven of which are true freshmen. Of the seven freshman, four have been thrust into prominent roles;
Lauren Heuiser (Helena, Mont.),
Jansyn Carrizales (Sunnyside, Wash.),
Norah Allen (Great Falls, Mont.), and
McKaila Balcom (Pasco, Wash.). The four have shown promise, but adjusting to the speed of the college game has come with growing pains.
Although the record is not where anyone in the program would like to see it, morale around the team is still at a high, and one reason is the dominance of
Julia Carr (Portland, Ore. / SR) on the back line.
Carr is leading the entire nation in digs per set (6.99) by a wide margin. The multi-time All-Conference performer is still playing at an extremely high level, and appears to be lock for the honor - and potentially more - again in 2023.
Rocky enters the match in the middle of the Frontier Conference standings, and is one of three Frontier teams in the receiving votes portion of the NAIA national coaches' poll.
First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Carroll PE Center, and tickets are available at the door.Â
