HELENA, Mont. - The Carroll College Men's Basketball team rallied from a first half deficit, but were unable to complete their comeback, falling 93-88 to Providence on Thursday in Helena.
The Fighting Saints (8-8, 2-3) came up just short in their effort to climb out of an early hole, falling to a Providence (9-9, 3-2) team who was on fire from beyond the arc.
Both teams exchanged baskets for the early portion of the first half, with neither team able to gain much of an advantage. Providence would strike first, capitalizing on a series of Carroll missed shots and turnovers to take a nine-point lead with five minutes left in the first half. Carroll would cut the lead to as little as three, but some late half buckets for the Argos would put Providence on top heading into halftime, 44-36.
Carroll would come out of the break with energy, whittling the Argo lead to just one point, two minutes into the half. From there, the remainder of the second frame would be a cat-and-mouse game, with the teams trading buckets, and neither able to break things open.
Andrew Cook (Huntington Beach, Calif. / SO) would tie the game at 54-54 with just under fourteen minutes remaining, but Carroll simply could not find a way to take a lead.
The Saints stayed within striking distance, and after a series of fouls and some missed free throws, would find themselves with a shot to tie game with under ten seconds to play.
Coming off of a sideline inbounds,
Brayden Koch (Helena, Mont. / FR) was able to get a decent three point look, but the shot traveled off the back-iron and Providence would walk out with a 93-88 win.
A pair of Providence players did the vast majority of scoring for the Argos. Davien Harris-Williams scored a game-high 35 points, going 7-12 from the three point line, and Marcus Stephens scored 28 points on 3-4 from beyond the arc.
Four Saints finished with double-digit points, led by a pair of Freshman.
Isaiah Moore (Fairfield, Calif. / FR) had another solid performance, finishing with 18 points and eight rebounds, while
Brayden Koch led the Saints with 20 points.
Andrew Cook added 17 points, and
Brendan Temple (Castle Rock, Colo. / SR) came up just one rebound short of a double-double (10 points, nine rebounds).
Carroll will look to avenge an early conference loss at MSU-Northern, when they host the Lights on Saturday at 4 p.m.
