Carroll Volleyball Wraps Up Big Sky Challenge with Win, Loss

BUTTE, Mont. - The Carroll College Volleyball team wrapped up play at the Big Sky Challenge with a pair of games on Saturday in Butte, Mont. The Saints defeated Dickinson State in five sets to start the day, and dropped a three-set match to No. 2 Jamestown in their afternoon match-up.

The Saints started their Saturday in the same fashion they did the day prior, with an early morning five-set slugfest.

Carroll found themselves in a hole early, after surrendering a late lead in the first frame to lose the set 27-25. Unable to get much traction, they dropped the second set as well, 25-21.

The tides would turn for the Saints in the third frame, and they were able to control the match from that point on. Carroll was dominant in the set, going on two separate runs of eight consecutive points en route to a 25-13 set win.

The fourth set was much of the same, with the Saints cruising to a 25-15 win to force a fifth set, where Carroll won handily, 15-9.

Reigning Frontier Conference Freshman of the Year Elizabeth Heuiser (Helena, Mont. / SO) had a strong showing, finishing the match with 15 kills, while setter Hannah Schweikert (Columbia Falls, Mont. / SO) finished with 42 assists.

The afternoon match-up would prove to be less fruitful for the Saints. No. 2 Jamestown proved to be too much to handle, going on to a three-set sweep, 25-16, 25-18, 25-21.

Errors plagued the Saints in the afternoon match, where they finished with a negative hitting percentage as a team. Jamestown, on the other hand, was extremely efficient in the first frame, boasting a .243 hitting percentage on their way to total of .177 on the day.

The Jimmies had two of the top-three kill leaders for the match, with Darienne Johnson and Kalli Hegerle each accruing 10 kills, along with Carroll's top offensive performer Katherine McEuen (Spokane, Wash. / SR)

The Saints will come out of the season opening tournament with a .500 record on the year, and will return to Helena for continued preparation for their next event. Carroll will take a trip to the desert this week, as they take part in the Ottawa (AZ) Invite in Surprise, Ariz. on Friday and Saturday.
