HELENA, Mont. – The Carroll College Volleyball team begins their 2022 season today, with a pair of games at the Big Sky Challenge in Butte, Mont. The Saints will play (RV) Vanguard at 9 a.m. as well as No. 12 Eastern Oregon at 5 p.m.
After a very productive spring and summer of preparation, the Saints Volleyball team is ready for their first action of the year. This spring was a new challenge for the Saints, featuring some more independent, team-led practices while Head Coach Moe Boyle stepped up to fill-in as the Interim Softball Coach. The team, however, embraced the challenge and put in the work.
"I think our team is coming in with a significant amount of playing time, that gives them the experience they need at the start of what will be a tough year," Said Head Coach Moe Boyle. "We're looking to start the year strong, and build off of that momentum."
The Saints rotation will feature some very familiar faces to Carroll supporters, having only lost two seniors from last year's squad.
Julia Carr (Portland, Ore. / JR) looks to continue the high-level play that earned her a first-team All-Frontier Conference nod last season. "Julia is going to be a staple for us defensively," Said Boyle. "We are very excited that she is back, and can't wait to see what she can do this year."
The Saints will also have Middle Hitter
Elizabeth Heuiser, (Helena, Mont. / SO) the reigning Frontier Conference Freshman of the Year back on the court. "She (Heuiser) is an amazing talent, and has only gotten better, we are looking forward to seeing her continue to grow in the middle." Said Boyle
Carroll will look to stellar play from a group of experienced seniors,
Kylie Kackman (Colfax, Wash. / SR)
Madde Boles (Kalispell, Mont. / SR) and
Katherine McEuen (Spokane, Wash. / SR).
"Madde and Katherine have done a lot for the team over the last four years," Said Boyle. "Everyone is excited to see what they can do in the front with increased roles"
Kackman will be transitioning out of the offense, into a defensive role for the 2022 season, with
Hannah Schweikert (Columbia Falls, Mont. / SO) picking up the additional offensive workload as a setter.
"Kylie is a tremendous leader, and will do whatever is necessary to better the team." Said Boyle. "That's just the type of quality person that she is."
One new face to keep an eye on will be
Sidney Gulick (Kalispell, Mont. / FR). "You will recognize that Sidney is going to step in and play like a veteran, not a Freshman, and she fits into our scheme seamlessly." Said Boyle.
The Saints Schedule for the season includes early-year tournaments with loads of competitive teams. "We have a very tough schedule," Said Boyle. "We are playing some highly ranked teams early in the year, like this weekend, with Jamestown, who is No. 2, and Eastern Oregon, who's No. 12."
The Schedule does not get any easier after this weekend. "The next three weekends of games, we play a significant number of ranked opponents, so we will find out fast exactly where we are at." Said Boyle.
"I'm really looking forward to working with this group," Said Boyle "They enjoy being on the court together and bring the energy every day. It will be a fun group for the fans to watch"
