Men's Golf | 07/28/22 | 2:25 PM

HELENA, Mont. – Head Coach Ben MacIntyre has announced the addition of six signees for the 2022 Carroll College Men's and Women's Golf Teams.

The 2022 Carroll College Golf signing class includes three women and three men. All six newcomers bring with them an abundance of high school and junior tournament experience. Below is some quick information on the new Saints golfers.

Stella Claridge – (Kalispell, Mont. / Glacier HS)

Stella Claridge joins the Carroll Women's Golf Team with an impressive resume spanning junior and high school events. Claridge boasts individual medalist performances at the 2020 Buffalo Hill Junior Club Championship, and the Montana State Junior Qualifier. She finished in 15th at the Montana State Junior Championship, before a Senior High School season in which she finished in the top-five at every event through the western divisional tournament. Claridge went on to finish 12th at the 2021 MHSA State Tournament, and was named both all-conference and all-state for her performances.

Makayla Bury – (Helena, Mont. / Capital HS)

Homegrown talent Makayla Bury joins the Saints after earning varsity letters each of the last three seasons at Helena Capital HS. Bury earned medalist honors after topping the leaderboard at the Madison Meadows junior tournament. She was named to all-conference in both her Junior and Senior seasons in high school, as well as being named an academic all-state selection this past season.

Makayla Christiansen – (Oakdale, Calif. / Vanguard University)

Makayla Christiansen joins the Saints as a transfer from Vanguard University in Costa Mesa, California. She will be a Junior in standing with two years of eligibility left. Makayla finished fifth at the Golden State Athletic Conference Championship in the spring of 2022. During the 2021-22 season, she carried an impressive 84.4 scoring average, including several rounds in the mid-seventies. In high school she was a four-year letter winner, and finished all-league in all four years.

Leo Werschay – (St. Augusta, Minn. / Cathedral HS)

Leo Werschay will join the Saints Men's Golf Team after qualifying for the Minnesota State Tournament as an individual in 2021. Werschay credits his short game as a key strength that helped him to multiple top-3 finishes in junior events including The Resorters (2019), Hurricane (three times), and Junior PGA (six times).

Kaden Matheny – (Missoula, Mont. / Missoula Loyola HS)

Kaden Matheny joins the Carroll program on the heels of a victory at a two-day high school event in Eureka, Mont. Over the course of his high school career Matheny accrued three top-15 placements, four top-10 placements, five top-5 finishes, three individual wins, and was named an all-conference performer. In addition to his win in Eureka, Matheny also finished second at an event held at Bill Roberts Golf Course in Helena this spring.

Caleb Spangler – (Havre, Mont. / Havre HS)

Caleb Spangler rounds out the recruits for 2022, coming off a strong 2022 season at Havre High. Spangler participated in multiple sports for the Blue Ponies, including basketball, tennis, and golf. Spangler won the Havre invite in 2021, earning Hi-Line Athlete of the Week honors from the Havre Daily News. In addition, Spangler was twice named a Class A all-conference golfer.

"We are very excited about these additions to the college and the golf program and very eager to get going this fall." Said Head Coach Bennett MacIntyre. "Makayla Christiansen will be a much-needed veteran presence who is a competitor and battle tested. We really tried hard to get her to Carroll a couple of years ago and to be able to add her as a transfer now will be huge for the team this fall.  Stella Claridge is going to be playing varsity as a freshman and has been doing a great job this summer traveling across the state of Montana and getting tournament rounds in.  We are very excited to add a local product out of Capital High in Makayla Bury, she is another one who is going to play a lot this fall and has the ability to help us out.  On the men's side Leo Werschay from Minnesota is going to be counted on from the start and I think he will rise to the challenge. He's already had good success in high school and junior tournaments which should translate well to the college game. It is great to pick up a couple of Montana recruits in Kaden Matheny and Caleb Spangler. Kaden will be a name to watch the next four years and he and Caleb will have a chance to come in and play varsity as freshman."

The Carroll college golf teams will kick off their 2022-23 conference slate at the MSU-Northern Invitational on September 12 in Shelby, Mont. which will be played at Marias Valley Golf Club.
