HELENA, Mont. - The No. 23 Carroll College Men's Basketball team were able to grind out their first overtime victory of the season, beating Corban 82-75 on Saturday evening at the Carroll College PE Center.
The Fighting Saints (7-2, 1-1) were able to sneak out a hard-fought win to complete an undefeated weekend at the 2022 Comfort Suites Classic. Despite a valiant effort from a deep Corban (6-3, 2-1) team, the Saints pulled away in the final seconds of overtime to secure an 82-75 win.
The final game of the Comfort Suites Classic did not disappoint, with fans in attendance getting five extra minutes of back-and-forth action on Saturday at the PE Center.
Neither team was able to gather much momentum through the early stages of the game, and near the midpoint of the first half, the physical play of both teams slowed the pace to a near stand-still. Carroll carried a 17-14 lead for nearly three minutes of game time midway through the first half while the teams' defenses flashed.
A pair of Freshmen,
Brayden Koch (Helena, Mont. / FR) and
Isaiah Moore (Fairfield, Calif. / FR) provided some breathing room for the Saints at the end of the first half, combining for Carroll's final 13 points of the first half.
The Saints would carry a 36-30 lead into the halftime break on 50 percent from the field as a team.
After some give-and-take in the early stages of the second half, Carroll would find a way to maintain their six point lead deep into the period. They could not, however, find a way to break away from a stingy Warrior squad. Carroll's largest lead would only reach seven points, and with two minutes left in regulation Corban would make their move.
The second half was dominated by two players for the Warriors. Forward Darius Henderson, and guard Taylor Anderson played a terrific two-man game, combining for 24 of Corban's 39 second-half points. The pair were hard to stop for the Saints, but the biggest Warrior shot of the night would not come from either.
With Carroll leading 69-66 and just seconds left, Corban's Masie Mohammadi would make a three-point shot with a Carroll defender draped all over him to tie the game.
Jonny Hillman (Post Falls, Idaho / SR) would get a decent look with time expiring, but could not finish and the game would move into extra time.
In overtime, Carroll forward
Brendan Temple (Castle Rock, Colo. / SR) made perhaps the play of the night, poking the ball free near mid-court, racing to the basket and dunking it home all while being fouled.
Carroll's two Seniors controlled the game in overtime, accounting for 11 of the Saints' 13 points in the frame, and making clutch free throws to secure the 82-75 win.
Temple finished just three assists shy of a triple-double, scoring 14 points, as well as 10 rebounds, and seven assists.
Andrew Cook led the Saints in scoring again, finishing his night with 17 points alongside eight rebounds.
Carroll saw five players score in double digits, Temple (14), Cook (17), Hillman (15), Koch (13), and Moore (14).
Corban's Darius Henderson finished with a double-double, grabbing 11 rebounds and scoring a game-high 23 points.
The Saints will have a week of rest before heading to sunny Arizona next weekend for the Cactus Classic. Carroll will play four games in as many days, starting with Ottawa (Ariz.) next Saturday.
