EUGENE, Ore. - The Carroll College Women's Soccer team dropped a heartbreaking match against No. 24 College of Idaho in the quarterfinals of the Cascade Collegiate Conference Women's Soccer Championships on Tuesday afternoon, 3-2.
Carroll (9-6-4, 6-4-2), gave Saints fans quite the emotional rollercoaster this afternoon, and battled until the bitter end, but ultimately came up just a fraction short of an improbable comeback against No. 24 College of Idaho (14-2-2), falling 3-2 on a late-game goal.
After a wether-delayed start to the 2022 CCC Women's Soccer Championship, both the sixth-seed Saints and the third-seed Yotes came into today's match bubbling with anticipation.
College of Idaho struck first, getting a goal in the tenth minute from CCC Newcomer of the Year Gianna Yslava, assisted by Laura Wegner, to take a 1-0 advantage.
Ten minutes later, Yslava would score her second goal of the match, this time unassisted to give the Yotes a 2-0 lead, which they would carry into the halftime break.
College of Idaho outshot Carroll 9-2 in the first half, but a resilient Saints squad would not go down quietly.
Jamie Sheridan (Helena, Mont. / SO) would give Carroll life in the 69th minute, beating the Yotes' keeper off of an assist from Molly Molvig (Billings, Mont. / SO) to bring the Saints within one score, 2-1.
Just three minutes later, Sheridan would make her presence felt. After a CCC Offensive Player of the year Blair Stapleton (Billings, Mont. / SR) penalty kick and subsequent shot were saved, Sheridan was able to bury her second goal in less than four minutes to even the score at 2-2.
In the 88th minute, College of Idaho's Lily Schalke would provide the dagger, scoring on a free kick goal from the top of the box to give the Yotes a 3-2 win.
The Saints will send off a group of seniors that have an overall record of 27-24-7 and have competed in the CCC Women's Soccer Chamionship all four years of their Carroll careers. Saints fans do have plenty to be excited for with Head Coach David Thorvilson's strong recruiting efforts over the last two years looking to make some noise in the coming years.
