Carroll Football Races Past MSU-Northern, 47-3

HAVRE, Mont. - The Carroll College Football team got back in the win column with a 47-3 win over MSU-Northern Saturday Afternoon in Havre.

Carroll (4-2) came into the afternoon with one goal in mind, get a win heading into their second bye week of the season. The Saints did just that, and did so in convincing fashion.

It was a slow start for the Saints, and they found themselves in trouble early. After a quick three-and-out, the Lights managed to block Spencer Berger's (Billings, Mont. / FR) punt, and took over possession at the Carroll one yard-line. The Saints defense would stand its ground however, with a tone-setting goal line stand holding the Lights to a field goal, their only points of the game.

MSU-Northern (0-6) carried the 3-0 lead into the second quarter, but it would be all Carroll the rest of the way. The Saints would explode for 27 points in the second quarter.

Duncan Kraft (Billings, Mont. / R-JR) would open the scoring for the Saints. His 32 yard touchdown scamper would cap off a seven-play drive and put the Saints on top 7-3.

Five minutes later, on the Saints' next possession, Matthew Burgess (Junction City, Ore. / JR) would run in his second touchdown of the year from one yard out, moving the score to 14-3.

On the next Carroll possession, Jack Prka (Coeur d'Alene, Idaho / SO) connected with Chris Akulschin (Gig Harbor, Wash. / R-FR) for an 11 yard touchdown pass. That touchdown marked the third time in the last two games that the pair have connected for six points. Berger could not make the PAT, making the score 20-3.

With under two minutes in the half, the Saints Defense would come up big again, Elijah Larson (Sandpoint, Idaho / R-SO) would force a Northern fumble, Thomas McGree (Butte, Mont. / R-SO) would scoop it and rumble 25 yards for the defensive score, and bring the lead to 27-3 heading into the break.

In the second half, Carroll would get some of their younger players in-game experience.

On the first Carroll possession of the second half Running Back Joaquin Porcayo (Yuba City, Calif. / FR) would cap off a twelve-play, 68 yard drive with his first collegiate touchdown, an eight yard burst up the middle. Another Berger missed PAT would make the score 33-3.

Porcayo would get his second score of the game at the end of the third quarter. His nine-yard score would extend the Carroll lead to 40-3 heading into the fourth.

Second-string Quarterback Ryan Daggett (Ripon, Calif. / R-JR) would add the final blow for the Saints in the fourth quarter, as he punched in a one-yard run for a touchdown to bring the final score to 47-3.

Carroll's defense absolutely dominated MSU-Northern on the afternoon, holding the lights to a net of just 42 yards of sack-adjusted total yardage. The Saints defense had four sacks, and held Freshman Quarterback Chance Fields to just 4-16 passing, for 32 yards.

Jack Prka finished his day 16-22 for 178 yards and a touchdown, continuing his strong play from last week.

The Saints backs combined for 207 rush yards, and were led by Duncan Kraft's 66 yard performance. Joaquin Porcayo was impressive in his first collegiate action, scoring twice and finishing with 41 yards to match that of Matthew Burgess. Cormac Benn (Bigfork, Mont. / R-FR) had another strong day as well, with 52 yards rushing on the afternoon.

Tight End Tony Collins (Fort Worth, Texas / SR) was the leading receiver for the Saints, finishing with 76 yards on five receptions. Jaden Harrison (St. George, Utah / R-JR) added 59 yards on four catches.

Carroll will have a bit of rest this week, as they have their second bye-week of the season before hosting No. 17 Rocky Mountain College (5-1) in a pivotal Frontier Conference match-up at Nelson Stadium on October 22.
