HELENA, Mont. - The No. 25 Carroll College Football team earned another blowout victory on Saturday, beating Eastern Oregon 37-3 at Nelson Stadium in Helena,
The Saints (6-2) came into Saturday riding a two-game win-steak in which they had allowed only three total points, Saturday's game against EOU (1-8) would be a repeat of the dominant defensive performances that Carroll has shown over the last month.
Carroll hopped out to and early 7-0 lead, when
Chris Akulschin (Gig Harbor, Wash. / R-FR) hauled in a 6 yard touchdown pass from
Jack Prka (Coeur d'ALene, Idaho / SO) to cap off a ten-play, 86 yard drive. The touchdown was the fourth of the season for Akulschin, but it would not be his final trip to the end-zone on the afternoon.
After a Mountaineer punt, Prka would connect with
Tony Collins (Fort Worth, Texas / SR) for a 43 yard gain, moving the Saints into EOU territory where
Duncan Kraft (Billings, Mont, / R-JR) would eventually cash-in a 12 yard touchdown run to put Carroll on top 14-0 heading into the second quarter.
Spencer Berger (Billings, Mont. / FR) made a 29-yard field goal on the next Carroll possession, extending the Saints lead to 17-0 with just over ten minutes left in the second quarter.
On the next Carroll possession
Matthew Burgess (Junction City, Ore. / R-JR) punched-in a ten yard rush to cap-off a ten play, 56 yard drive. The Burgess score would advance the Carroll lead to 24-0.
With two minutes left in the first half, Prka would hit Akulschin across the middle where he would outrace the entire Mountaineer secondary for a 50 yard touchdown, expanding the Carroll lead to 30-0 after a missed PAT, where it would stay heading into the halftime break.
The Saints would score on their first opportunity in the second half. Prka and Akulschin would link up for the second time, a 12 yard touchdown pass, that would finish a 14 play, 63-yard drive and give the Saints a 37-0 lead. Akulschin's third touchdown of the afternoon was the icing on the cake for a Carroll squad that continues to stack wins as they chase a spot in the NAIA playoffs.
Ethan Cutler would provide the Mountaineers with their only points of the game with just seconds left in the fourth quarter, bringing the final score to 37-3.
A suffocating Carroll defense held the Mountaineers to just 95 total yards, once again showing why they are one of the top units in the NAIA, and are a force to be reckoned with as the Frontier Conference schedule winds down.
Carroll Quarterback
Jack Prka finished a stellar day with 17 completions for 271 yards and three touchdowns.
Redshirt-Freshman
Chris Akulschin finished a career-day with 9 receptions for 158 yards and three touchdowns.
Matthew Burgess was the leading rusher for the Saints, finishing his day with 50 yards and a touchdown on what is likely his final game at Nelson Stadium.
Saturday's Senior Day win will be one to remember for a graduating class that has won three straight games over the Mountaineers. Saturday's win, more palatable than the 25-23 thriller in La Grande earlier in September, keeps the Saints on track for a chance at the NAIA Playoffs.
The Saints are still one game behind No. 12 College of Idaho (7-1) for the Frontier Conference lead
Carroll will shift their focus to a road game in Ashland, Ore. next Saturday, where they will square off with Southern Oregon (3-5) at 2 p.m. (MDT)
