HELENA, Mont. -- Friday afternoon, the Carroll College Fighting Saints Softball team hosted the top team in the nation, Southern Oregon, for a double-header. The Saints dropped both games, 10-5 and 18-0.
Game one got off to a hot start for both teams, leading to a 5-5 score after three innings.
The Saints' bats were helped significantly by Amber Brewer, a junior outfielder from Peoria, Ariz., who went 3-4 with a homer to left field in the third inning.
Kaitlynn Ayers, a freshman infielder from Twin Falls, Idaho, also had a big contribution in the first inning with a three-run home run.
Unfortunately that was all the Saints could put together in game one and Southern Oregon was able to string together five unanswered to hold off the Saints.
In game two, Lauren Quirke was locked in and threw five scoreless innings on the way to the Raiders' second win of the day.
Southern Oregon was able to push across some runs early on and then had an eight-run third inning that put the game out of reach.
The Saints unfortunately were not able to put together a comeback and suffered their second loss of the day.
With the pair of wins Friday afternoon, Southern Oregon moves to 40-2 on the season overall and 22-1 in conference. The Saints fall to 12-28 overall and 7-16 in conference.
The Saints will play again tomorrow in another doubleheader against Southern Oregon with the first game starting at 11 a.m. and the second game immediately after the first.
