SIOUX CITY, Iowa -- The Carroll College Football team fell to top-seeded Morningside in the opening round of the NAIA Football Championship series 55-0 on Saturday.
This loss caps off an excellent season for the Saints in their second year under Head Coach
Troy Purcell. Carroll accomplished a lot in a little bit of time in this Spring Season as they finish up with an overall record of 3-2, a Frontier Conference Championship, and a trip to the post-season. Both the conference title and the playoff appearance are firsts for the program since 2014.Â
In Saturday's game, the Saints were out-dueled by the prolific offensive attack of the Mustangs. Both teams traded stops early on in the first quarter, including a fumble recovery by Carroll on the opening drive of the game.Â
Morningside stitched together two touchdown drives late in the first quarter, both ending in Anthony Sims rushing touchdowns, to give themselves a 13-0 lead after 15 minutes of play.Â
In the second quarter, back-to-back blocked punts set up a pair of quick touchdowns for the Mustangs. Morningside led 34-0 at half time.
Carroll's offense moved the ball throughout the second half, but they were unable to capitalize on several long drives. Morningside never looked back as they went on to win the game by a final score of 55-0.Â
With this win, Morningside advances on to the round of eight in the NAIA FCS.
Carroll now transitions into the off-season with hopes to build off of this year's success in the fall. They will return nine offensive starters and ten defensive starters when August rolls around.Â
