No. 25 Carroll WBB battles back to defeat UP

HELENA, Mont. -- Down 15, the Fighting Saints never gave up.

"That was just a gut check right there."

That quote from coach Rachelle Sayers sums up the battle the Saints went through Saturday evening against the Providence Argos.

No. 25 Carroll College used an 11-2 run in the third quarter, a game-high 19 points from Christine Denny and a huge 3 down the stretch with just minutes remaining from Sienna Swannack

The Saints were able to take advantage of 21 Argo turnovers and were able to work their way back into the game throughout the second half. The Saints dug themselves a bit of a hole in the second quarter where they were outscored 18-6 and really struggled to keep up with the Argos' scoring. However, the Saints brought it home with their own monster quarter of 20-8 in the fourth to close out Providence and secure their third conference win of the season.

Carroll's offense was led by Christine Denny's 19 points, Swannack's 15, and Danielle Wagner's 11.

The Argos also had a balanced attack with four players in double figures led by Kennedy Cartwright's 15.

"It's just heart," Sayers said. "We were really uncomfortable in that zone. I credit Providence for that. We were getting good shots. We just weren't knocking it down. We just had to weather the storm. It could have gone one of two ways. We could have got blown out of our gym. Or we can battle back and try to get in it."

The Saints will head to Billings on Wednesday to battle Rocky Mountain at 5:30 p.m.
