HELENA, Mont. -- A battle of unbeaten Frontier foes descends upon the PE Center on Saturday.
The No. 23-ranked Carroll College Fighting Saints (12-3, 3-0 Frontier Conference) host the No. 7-ranked Providence Argonauts (15-0, 3-0), bringing a Top 25 showcase and a right to establish the pecking order in the league. Only one team will keep its perfect conference record intact.
"They have a great point guard in Brandon Cotton who is a senior and he's the head of the snake," Saints coach
Kurt Paulson said. "(Zach) Darko-Kelly is just a great player. Defensively he gets out in transition and creates offense from defense. Both of those guys are pressure defensive guys and they can get out in transition."
The Saints and Argonauts both took down Montana State-Northern earlier this week. The Saints traveled to Havre and won 69-58, while the Argonauts hosted MSU-N and won 100-65.
The Saints were led by
Dane Warp's 25 points in that game. Warp leads the team with 19.1 points per game, while
Jovan Sljivancanin adds in 18.8 to lead Carroll.
Sljivancanin also leads the league in rebounding (10.6) per game and is No. 4 in the NAIA.
Freshman guard
Dennis Flowers III also adds in 11 points per game and a team-high 2.1 steals per game.
The Argonauts have been bolstered this season by the return of Darko-Kelly, who leads the Frontier in scoring (21.4), steals (2.6) and blocks (1.5) per game. His PPG ranks No. 7 in the NAIA.
Providence also gets big production from Brandon Cotton (15.5 ppg) and Joel Thabize (11.1 ppg).
"They have some size inside with (Jaxen) Hashley and Thabize and some quick, athletic guards on the wing. Very physical," Paulson said. "They play pressure D. They want to get downhill on the drives with the dribble. They have some really good shooters. They're really balanced and probably the most balanced team in the league."
The Argonauts have scored 100 points or more in five games this season.
The Saints went 2-1 against the Argonauts a season ago.
"We have to take care of the ball and rebound against them," Paulson said. "We have the home-court advantage, but they're playing great and really put it to Northern. It will be a great game for us."
The game is scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. tipoff on Saturday.
For those who cannot be in attendance, a live stream will be offered via the Carroll Athletics YouTube Page. Fans can also hear the game on Rewind 94.9, called by Carroll College Saints talent Daniel Salle and Hall of Fame coach Gary Turcott. The game can also be tracked via live stats kept by DakStats.
