Carroll men's soccer claims 1-0 exhibition win over Gillette

HELENA, Mont. -- Carroll College's men's soccer team took on Gillette College in an exhibition on Saturday, claiming a 1-0 victory.

The game was played as three 30 minute periods. Carroll used its first group -- save several key starters who sat -- in the first period, mixed in a second unit in the second period and then went back to their main group to finish the game out.

"The first 30 minutes was a  give and take, trying to figure each other out," Saints coach Doug Mello said. "It was a fairly even 30. To our credit, the second team went out and held them in check and worked them a bit. It was good because it gave our guys a little bit of a rest. And then we completely dominated the third. We maybe overpassed the ball a little bit when it came to scoring more goals. We were a little too patient."

Pablo Salamanca scored in the second period to give the Saints a 1-0 lead and then Carroll maintained it, all while generating more shots on goal.

Sophomore goalkeeper Kaden Connor and freshman keeper Melle de Reuver both had impressive saves on the day.

"Both goalies when they were called upon made great saves," Mello said.

The exhibition's format allowed Carroll to get the majority of the roster in the action.

"Jack Bentson's play we were happy with," Mello said. "Certainly Javi Rodriguez did well in the back and marking, making some overlapping runs. Jero and Santi had a very high work rate today. They really did a nice job. I just wish they were rewarded with a goal. Ben did a good job working hard in the midfield."

The Saints take on Sheridan College on Sunday at 1 p.m.
