2019 Halo Award winners

HELENA, Mont. -- The second annual Halo Awards took place on Saturday in the PE Center, recognizing Carroll College student-athletes for their extraordinary achievements in athletics, the classroom and in the community.

In total, 33 awards were given on the night, the most prestigious being the St. Sebastian Award, which is given to the student-athletes who exemplifies most what it means to be a Carroll College student-athlete. One who embodies qualities consistent with the Carroll College mission statement such as courage, honor, and service. These athletes demonstrate a strong work ethic, athletic performance, academic integrity, and leadership. The recipients are well-rounded individuals who give back to Carroll as well as the Carroll community.

This year's St. Sebastian winners were Jenna Starke and Jonathan Taylor.

Starke, a junior volleyball player from Helena, Montana, is the secretary of SAAC and student servant leader with College Christian Fellowship, which includes leading a small group and weekly meetings with girls who want to be encouraged in their faith life. Off campus she is currently a "big" with Big Brothers Big Sisters for a fifth grader at Hawthorne Elementary, and they have been meeting for nearly three years. Starke has also volunteered at Rocky Mountain Care Center for two years, which began with therapy visits with her anthrozoology program dog Moose and has turned into visiting a 29-year-old resident with cerebral palsy weekly. Starke will be her sponsor as she goes through RCIA to receive the Sacraments in the Catholic Church this coming April. Starke has taken part in a mission trip to Las Vegas with FREE International to learn about the realities of sex trafficking and conduct outreach to the community, a medical mission trip to Ecuador with a physical therapist to help kids with disabilities who are sponsored by Families with Heart, and a headlights trip to Chicago with Franciscans of the Eucharist of Chicago to serve children in a gang-riddled neighborhood on the west side. She's completed about 220 hours of community service since her freshman year and was noted as a Champion of Character this past spring.

Taylor, a senior men's soccer player from Missoula, Montana, spent his last two spring breaks in Pocatello and Salt Lake City for mission trips, volunteered two weeks in Brazil to build churches and schools while coaching soccer clinics, coached soccer to inner-city youth in Chicago, and was a student leader with CCF for two years, participated in athlete's bible study for two years, led an athlete's prayer group, spent a semester working with Intermountain as a support counselor for emotionally abused children, worked sports camps for children in Texas with Fellowship of Christian Athletes and led bible study classes for Fellowship of Christian Athletes, taught leadership skills for Fellowship of Christian Athletes. He organized the men's soccer team to help with the annual St. Helena Cathedral Christmas for needy families. He became a 2018 second team Cascade Collegiate Conference choice and a 2018 Academic All-Conference selection. He was twice voted Defensive Team MVP by his peers and is business sport management major.
