No. 25 Carroll WBB handles No. 21 Thomas More, 68-48

Box Score CHANDLER, Ariz. -- No. 25 Carroll College used a strong defensive game plan and 23 points from Dani Wagner to dispel No. 21 Thomas More 68-48 on Friday at the Frontier Classic played at Chandler-Gilbert Community College.

"It was a great way for us to finish the preseason and finish 2019," Saints coach Rachelle Sayers said. "Thomas More was a very good team. I thought the kids battled and were extremely physical. Thomas More really came after us in the second half. It wasn't pretty, but I thought the kids found a way to win."

Thomas More entered the game as the No. 2 three-point shooting team in the NAIA with a 40 percent shooting average from beyond the arc. The Saints held them without a make from deep (0-for-10).

The Saints (9-5), meanwhile, knocked down 43 percent of their shots, including a 47 percent clip from deep.

Wagner led all scorers with her 23 points, hitting 8-for-14 from the field and 2-for-4 from deep. She also hauled in nine rebounds, a mark that tied the game-high.

Kamden Hilborn broke double figures, too, scoring 13 points to go along with four rebounds, two assists and a steal. She hit 4-of-5 of her three point attempts.

"I just thought the kids played great," Sayers said. "Kamden hit some big shots tonight. "it was fun to get everybody in this weekend and it was a great way to finish."

The Saints stymied TM early, jumping out to a 21-10 lead after one quarter. By halftime, the Saints were in full control, leading 38-23. The second half played tighter, including a run by Thomas More that cut the Saints' lead down to eight. Nevertheless, Carroll answered all of Thomas More's run with clean execution down the stretch.

"This was our third game in three days and it was only Thomas More's second game," Sayers said. "It was a big win. This is a team that has won two (NCAA) Division III national championships."

Emily Schultz led TM with 22 points and nine rebounds.

The Saints went 2-1 over the weekend, defeating Thomas More and San Diego Christian, while falling to No. 16 Our Lady of the Lake 72-69.

Wagner leads all scorers at the Frontier Classic with 24 points per game while shooting 52 percent.

"I thought Dani Wagner had an amazing weekend and really came through when we needed her," Sayers said.

The Saints are off until Jan. 7 when they return to conference-play against Montana State-Northern.
