HELENA, Mont. -- Riding a three-game winning streak, the No. 7-ranked Carroll College women's basketball team opens up the Frontier Conference season with a pair of home games against Montana Tech and Lewis-Clark State College.
First up, the Saints (6-3) take on the Orediggers (8-1) on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. in the PE Center.
"Tech comes in with a lot of confidence," Saints coach
Rachelle Sayers said. "They are playing well and have a lot of weapons. We feel confident that the preseason teams we have played have prepared us for the tempo and emotions in this game. We will need to be sharp and alert all night. After a month on the road, I know this team is not only battle-tested, but they are ready to go play on their home court. We are all excited for this matchup."
Carroll enters the contest with recent wins over Northwest Christian, College of Idaho and Eastern Oregon.
Carroll's scoring comes from everywhere but is led by a trio of guards. Dani Wagner (12.3),
Christine Denny (11.2) and
Sienna Swannack (10.6) all average over 10 points per game. Four different Saints have led the team in scoring for a game: Denny (three times), Wagner (three times),
Sienna Swannack (twice) and
Molly McDermott (once).
Denny and Wagner were selected preseason all-conference in the same coaches' poll. Denny was an honorable mention All-American last season while Wagner earned second team all-Frontier honors.
Tech counters with its top scorer Mesa Williams, who was also selected as a preseason all-conference pick. Williams averages 18.7 points per game and 3.9 rebounds.
After falling to Calgary to begin the season, Tech has won eight consecutive games.
Tech and Carroll share three common opponents in their non-conference schedules. Both Tech and Carroll defeated COI twice, won handily against Cal Maritime, but differ with their results against Corban. The Orediggers defeated the Warriors in Butte, 81-47, while the Saints fell on the road to Corban 65-56.
Last season, the Saints defeated the Orediggers four times.
Then, on Friday, the Saints take on Lewis-Clark State College (5-1)
