HELENA, Mont. -- The No. 7-ranked Carroll College women's basketball team hits the road for a pair of tough games in Spokane, Washington, as the Fighting Saints take on Whitworth and Whitman in the Whit Classic to be played at the Whitworth Fieldhouse.
"We are really excited to get on the road and get back to work to play two very quality NCAA Div III teams," Saints coach
Rachelle Sayers said. "Both play an uptempo style and are very scrappy on the defensive side. Whitman is a Top 10 Div III team and knocked us around pretty good two years ago at this tournament, so we are looking forward to playing them again. The better quality opponent we can play at this time of year, the better we will be when it really matters."
First, the Saints face Whitworth on Friday in Spokane.
Whitworth (2-0) owns wins over Colorado College (61-55) and Johnson & Wales University (80-45). The Pirates are led by sophomore Talia Brander's 16 points per game. Joining her in double figures are Quincy McDeid (12 ppg) and Jordan Smith (12 ppg).
Saturday, the Saints take on Whitman at 3:30 p.m.
Whitman was picked to win the Northwest Conference a season after falling in the NWC Championship game. D3Hoops.com also noted the Blues as the No. 21 team in NCAA DIII.
Whitman graduated only one player off a team that went 20-7 last season. The Blues are 1-1 this season with a loss to Central Washington (74-65) and a win over Eastern Oregon (63-60).
The Saints are 2-1 this season, defeating College of Idaho and Cal Maritime, but falling to Calgary in the first game of the season. The Saints notably pushed the Montana Lady Griz to overtime before falling 74-70 in an exhibition.
Through three games, the Saints are led by Dani Wagner's 15 points per game.
Sienna Swannack also cracks double-figures scoring with 10.7 points per contest.
Christine Denny leads the Saints in rebounding with 7.7 per game, while adding in the third-highest scoring total at 9.7 points per game.
Carroll's roster carries six players from the Spokane-area, so the game will give the players a return to familiar scenery.
"We have already learned so much about our team and I am excited for all of our Spokane kids to be able to play in front of their friends and families and for our team to get back to Saints Basketball," Sayers said.
Live streams and stats will be offered for both games.
