HELENA, Mont. -- The Carroll College men's soccer team battled back from a 1-0 deficit while playing a man down, but undefeated Corban prevailed 2-1 on Saturday at Centennial Park.
Camilo Avendano fired a rebound into the back of the net in the 23rd minute to get the Warriors (10-0-1, 8-0 Cascade Collegiate Conference) out in front early.
A tough call led to the Saints being without
Paolo Georgiades in the 39th minute.
"We deserved a better fate today," Saints coach
Doug Mello said. "The sending off of Paolo in the first half was harsh, but even a man down we played even and at times outplayed a top twenty and undefeated squad. We are disappointed but take solace in effort."
However, after losing a man, the Saints were able to tie the game up.
Nick Lowrimore scored in the 47th minute to knot the game at 1-1.
Like the Saints had done earlier in the season, battling evenly with MSU Billings while playing down a man, here the Saints were challenging one of the best teams in the CCC while playing at a disadvantage.
The Saints' inspired play could only hold them even for about another minute longer as Corban's Hakeem Smith gave the Warriors the lead for good with a goal in the 48th minute.
Carroll had a few chances too, failing to capitalize on a penalty kick and off another great attempt in front of the net.
Corban outshot the Saints 19-14.
The game was moved to Centennial Park Saturday morning after previously being scheduled to be played at the auxiliary field next to Nelson Stadium. The Saints' usual home field at Nelson was home to a football game on Saturday.
The loss gives the Saints (5-6-1, 4-4 CCC) a 1-1 split for the weekend.
Next week, the Saints travel to Portland, Oregon, to face Warner Pacific and Multnomah.
