No. 2 Fighting Saints face No. 25 Providence to open up road swing

GAME NOTES | WATCH | LISTEN
HELENA, Mont. -- Mere days after moving up to No. 2 in the NAIA, the Carroll College Fighting Saints hit the road to begin a four-game road swing to once again prove their mettle.

No. 2 Carroll (20-2, 9-1 Frontier Conference) travels to No. 25 Providence (14-7, 5-5) on Friday, and then travels to a dangerous Montana State-Northern on Saturday.

"Everybody is going to ready for us," Saints coach Kurt Paulson said. "You have to adjust and make some changes to your game plan. It will be interesting in trying to see how teams guard us."

Carroll earned an 84-73 win over Providence back on Nov. 29 -- though both teams were injured. Carroll missed top defender Ife Kalejaiye, while Providence was without starting center Jaxen Hashley.

The Argonauts feature four players averaging double figures in scoring. Brandon Cotton (18), Jalen Shepard (17.6), Austin Starr (15.3) and Hashley (10.6) all do the lion's share of scoring for Providence.

The most effective part of that scoring attack comes from deep. Providence is No. 3 in the NAIA in three-point field goal percentage at 42 percent. That translates into 91.4 points per game, which is the No. 7 mark in the NAIA.

"They shoot it and play a mixture of man and zone," Paulson said. "They'll be ready for us."

As evidenced by their No. 2 ranking, the Saints have been rolling. Carroll won six consecutive games entering Friday. Only one American team has dealt the Saints a loss this season, a setback that the Saints avenged two weeks later when they beat Rocky Mountain College in Billings.

And while the Saints are No. 2 in the Top 25, they're No. 1 in scoring. Carroll is the best shooting team in the NAIA, holding the top mark in three-point percentage (45.6), field goal percentage (54.1) and free-throw percentage (81.2).

The Saints score well, and leading that charge is senior Match Burnham (19.9 points per game). Dane Warp (18.9), Matt Wyman (17.8) and Ife Kalejaiye (12.6) also pack a heavy scoring punch.

After the Argonauts' challenge, Carroll will take on MSU-Northern (13-9, 5-5), an up-and-down team that has played at least one close contest with every team in the Frontier.

Notes: Carroll's No. 2-ranking ties the school record held by the 2017-18 team... Match Burnham moved up to No. 12 on the all-time Carroll College men's basketball scoring list, while Matt Wyman moved up to No. 14 over the past weekend.
