No. 4 Carroll handles No. 16 LCSC's challenge

HELENA, Mont. -- Dane Warp, Match Burnham and Ife Kalejaiye combined for 61 points and the No. 4 Carroll College Fighting Saints defeated No. 16 Lewis-Clark State on Thursday, 85-69.

The Saints (19-2, 8-1 Frontier Conference) held a 48-36 lead at halftime and then built a 13-point lead early in the second half before the Warriors tested Carroll, cutting their lead to one.

"Give the guys credit," Saints coach Kurt Paulson told Sports 94.9 during his post-game interview. "I thought right at crunch time, the guys didn't panic. Just sticking to the game plan. We didn't try to get carried away with anything new."

Once LCSC got close in the second half the Saints put together an 11-0 run to regain control of the game, capped off by a Matt Wyman dunk off a feed from Thomas Austefjord.

After the Warriors' challenge, the Saints' lead ballooned to as many as 19 as the Saints were able to to stave off any more serious threats.

The win further cements Carroll atop the Frontier Conference standings. LCSC is considered another top contender in the Frontier, but on Thursday the Saints proved why they're the current league favorite. Carroll now owns a 2-0 advantage over LCSC this season.

The Saints built a lead in the first half thanks to lights out shooting. Carroll shot 10-of-12 from beyond the arc. Shamrock Campbell, Matt Wyman, Kalejaiye, Burnham, Warp and Jovan Sljivancanin all dropped at least one triple in the first half.

Kalejaiye had career highs in free throws shot and made (8-of-11).

"He showed out tonight," Paulson said. "Very happy for him."

Carroll shot 60 percent from the field, 59 percent from the three-point line and 59 percent form the foul line.

The Saints had come off a four games in seven days stretch last week, which presented a dilemma in rest-practice balance.

"It was tricky for me to figure out a plan," Paulson said.  "I didn't know how we could come out and play tonight because we rested them more than practice. It looked like the guys have a pop in their legs, so that worked."

Carroll has little rest before taking on Montana Western (7-13, 1-8) on Saturday in the PE Center at 7:30 p.m.
