Homecoming and Hall of Fame go hand and hand.
With Carroll College's football game against Southern Oregon serving as the anchor for homecoming weekend, another class of Carroll College Athletic Hall of Fame inductees come to light. Their induction will take place Saturday, Sept. 22, at 8:30 a.m., in the lower level of the Campus Center.
ABOUT THE CARROLL ATHLETIC HALL OF FAME Â
The Carroll College Athletic Hall of Fame honors Saints athletes who have left a lasting legacy on the college with their careers as exemplary student-athletes. Those inducted into the Hall of Fame have demonstrated the highest standard of sportsmanship and accomplishment in their athletic endeavors. Members of the Hall, often set records, win championships and earn other distinctions for their achievements on the field and in the classroom. The Carroll College Athletic Hall of Fame recognizes student-athletes, coaches, staff, teams and others whose athletic successes advance the college's tradition of champions. This year's inductees are:
2003-2004 Women's Basketball Team: The 2003-04 Carroll College women's basketball team went 28-7 overall, one of the best seasons in Saints women's basketball history. The 03-04 Saints started off the season winning six consecutive games before a loss to Minot State in November, a loss they would avenge just six days later. Similarly, the Saints won their opening six conference games en route to a 12-2 league record and regular season title. The team became the first in school history to make the NAIA Tournament. That year's Saints were made up of Rachel Bromiley, Andrea Hall, Lindsay Hart, Laci High, Kelsey Miller, Kate Paul, Catie Priddy, Jennifer Segadelli, Ellen Smith, Vanessa Tomco, Emili Woody and Tara Zoanni.
2004-2005 Women's Basketball Team: The 2004-05 team was the last team before the 2017-18 squad to win conference regular season and tournament titles. The Saints posted an impressive 29-7 record. They were the first team in school history to win a game at the NAIA National Tournament, defeating Mobile 72-67. A sharpshooting team from deep, the Saints owned the No. 1 mark in the NAIA in three-point shooting that season at 39.2 percent. The team was comprised of Kaylee Shaw, Laci High, Emili Woody, Carly Syverson, Angie Jensen, Catie Priddy, Rissy Obert, Jolene Fuzesy, Ellen Smith, Vanessa Tomco, Rachel Bromiley, Andrea Hall, Katie Rodgers and Sophie Forney.
Both teams were coached by Shawn Nelson, who was assisted by Carly Van Dyke and J.D. Soloman.
Bryan Hilborn (football): Hilborn was a record setting kicker and punter while at Carroll. He was twice a first-team All-Frontier kicker and a first-team All-American kicker in 1993, and a second team all-conference punter. The San Jose native holds the school record for six made field goals in one game, an effort that earned him NAIA Player of the Week of honors. He also at the time had the longest field goal in school history. His 18 career field goals made were a school record at the time and his 77 career PATs were second in school history at the time. In 1993, he led the NAIA in scoring by placekickers.
Stacey (Phillipe) Wines (volleyball): Wines was a three-year starter for Carroll volleyball. A Stanford, Montana, native, she posted 273 kills with a 3.03 kill percentage, 46 aces and 103 blocks her senior year. She was also an excellent server with a .940 serve percentage and 46 service aces her senior year. She was an honorable mention All-American in 1998. She won All-Pacific Northwest Region awards in 1997 and 1998. She was a first-team all-conference selection in 1997 and 1998 and second team all-conference in 1996.Â
Andrea (Hall) Thies (basketball): Thies was one of the most successful women's basketball players in Carroll history. The Missoula native earned first team All-Frontier Conference and honorable mention All-American honors. She was a member of the first team to play in the NAIA National Tournament her sophomore year. She was known for her knack for hitting big shots. Her best single season came her junior year when she averaged 14.6 points, 3.5 rebounds, 1.3 assists, one steal while shooting 42 percent from the field, 39 percent from three and 84 percent from the foul line.
Owen Koeppen (football): One of the greatest players in Carroll history. He was the NAIA National Player of the Year in 2008. He's a two-time first team AFCA All-American, a three-time first team all-conference honoree and a member of the 2007 National Champion team. He helped guide the Saints to Frontier Conference Championships in 2006, 2007, 2008. He registered 73 solo tackles (114 total), 13.5 tackles for a loss, nine sacks and two interceptions over 14 games in 2008 as part of his Player of the Year campaign. The athlete out of Florence, Montana, left Carroll with 335 total tackles, 23.5 sacks, 34.5 tackles for a loss and four interceptions.
Kyle Baker (football): Baker is one of the best offensive linemen to play for the Fighting Saints. He was a four-year starter, starting in 56 of 57 games at center. He was a two-year captain and a four-time national champion. He earned the Rimington Award in 2005, given to the best center in the country. The Coeur d'Alene native was first team All-American in 2005. In his senior season, he anchored an offensive line that allowed the Saints to put up 39 points per game, the second highest mark in the NAIA that year, and paved a path for Carroll runners to go for 232 yards per game, the No. 7 mark in the NAIA in 2005.
Sinan Guler (basketball): A junior college basketball transfer from Salt Lake Community College, Guler was a key member of two of the best men's basketball teams in school history. He was a starter and compiled 476 points, 152 assists, 33 blocks and 84 steals and 151 rebounds during the 2004-05 season in which the Saints played in the NAIA national semifinals. In the 2006 season, he scored 418 points, a team-high 29 blocks, 133 assists, 73 steals and 141 rebounds. He closed his career with 894 points, 157 steals, 285 assists, 292 rebounds and 62 blocks.
2018 WARREN L. NELSON AWARD
The Warren L. Nelson Award is the highest honor bestowed by the Carroll College Athletic Department. The Warren L. Nelson Award was established in 1986 to honor Mr. Nelson for his support of Carroll Athletics. The award is intended to recognize individuals who have exemplified the unselfish goodness of Warren Nelson in assisting, promoting and otherwise supporting Carroll Athletics. Nelson was a Reno, Nevada, businessman and longtime Carroll booster. He attended Mount St. Charles High School and college, playing for the 1931 Saints' football team that won the Montana Collegiate Championship.
Russ and Lisa Jacoby (class of 1986): Lisa and her late husband Russ have supported Carroll College for nearly 20 years through the Saints Athletic Association and through the Saints host family program, serving as a family for volleyball, football and basketball players. Lisa served as the SAA's president for four prosperous years, forging relationships with important Saints supporters in our community and running highly successful events.
