SURREY, B.C. – The Carroll College softball team split a pair of games with British Columbia, falling 7-6 in the series opener before winning the second game 7-3.
UBC scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning to take a 2-0 lead before Carroll responded with a run in the second when
Brittany Smith singled through the left side to score
Natalie Gaber.
The Thunderbirds scored a run in the bottom of the second and added another run in the third.
The Saints scored a run in the fifth on an
Anna ApRoberts double that scored
Brooke Brewer and cut the deficit to 4-2. UBC scored an additional run in the fifth to take a 5-2 lead before Carroll responded in the fifth.
Brewer singled to right field to score
Kendall Mooney and
Tianna Sell, and on the next at-bat,
Jaylin Kenney grounded out to second base, but Smith scored on the play to tie the game at 5-5.
British Columbia retook the lead in the bottom of the six before
Allison Williams singled to center field to score
TJ Rucker and again tie the game at 6-6.
UBC scored on a sac-fly in the bottom of the seventh to close out the 7-6 win.
The Saints outhit UBC 13-11 but committed a pair of errors in the loss.
Allison Williams (6-2) picked up her second loss of the year.
The second game had the makings of an offensive battled. The Saints got going early when
Tianna Sell hit a three-run jack down the left field line to score Kenney and
Allison Bayer.
British Columbia responded with three runs to tie the game after the first inning, but from that point on it was all Carroll.
The Saints added a run in the fourth inning when Sell scored on a throwing error after
Brooke Yarnall stole second base.
Carroll scored three runs in the seventh to add insurance. ApRoberts doubled to left field to score Kenney and Rucker. Bayer singled in the next at-bat to score ApRoberts from second and close out the scoring 7-3.
The Thunderbirds got one base runner, but the Saints closed out the four-run win on a fielder's choice from Smith to ApRoberts.
Tess Eaton moved to 5-0 on the year. She allowed three runs on six hits and walked two.
Bayer notched a pair of runs to lead Carroll and Sell tallied a game-high three RBIs.
The Saints and Thunderbirds play two more games Saturday at 1 p.m. MST.
