LA GRANDE, Ore. – The Carroll College softball team fell to Eastern Oregon 5-4 in Friday's Cascade Conference game before winning the non-conference series finale 5-0 Friday on the road in La Grande.
In game one, the Saints jumped out to a 2-0 lead on a singled from
Brooke Yarnall to right field which scored
Allison Bayer and
Anna ApRoberts. The lead would hold until the third inning when EOU picked up a run on bases load hit batter. Two batters later, an EOU single scored two more runs to give the Mountaineers a 3-2 lead. An EOU homer ended the rally with another two runs and a 5-2 advantage.
In the top of the fourth, the Saints picked up a run when
Brittany Smith doubled to left-center to score Yarnall to cut the deficit to 5-3.
In the fifth, the Saints cut the lead to 5-4 when
Allison Williams singled to left field to score
Allison Bayer. Carroll couldn't muster another run and EOU picked up the 5-4 win and the Cascade Conference series 3-2.
Bayer was 2-4 from the plate while Yarnall was 2-3. Brook Brown picked up the loss. She struck out three and allowed four earned runs in 2.2 innings.
In game two, a non-conference game, the Saints pulled out all the stops on the offensive end and Williams put up a shutout performance in the circle.
In the third inning, Williams singled to second base to score
Jaylin Kenney.
In the fifth
Courtney Schroeder doubled to left field to score Kenney. In the next at-bat, Williams singled to left field to score Schroeder.
In the sixth,
Katie Huisman singled to left field to score Smith. Two batters later, Kenney singled to right to score Huisman and close out the scoring for the Saints.
Carroll outhit EOU 12-3. Kenney and Williams were both 3-4 and Smith was 2-3. Williams struck out six, with no walks and allowed three hits in the complete-game shutout.
The Saints are now 19-11 on the season and 6-6 in Cascade Conference play.
Carroll has five Cascade Conference series left on the docket and four will be at home, starting on April 6-7 against Oregon Tech.
