HELENA, Mont. -- The No. 2-seeded Carroll College Saints women's soccer team lost 6-5 in penalty kicks to No. 7-seeded Rocky Mountain College on Wednesday in Springfield, Oregon, in the first round of the Cascade Collegiate Conference Tournament.
Carroll and Rocky battled to a 0-0 draw in regulation. That tie carried over through 30 minutes of scoreless action in overtime.
Carroll built a 4-3 advantage in PKs, but a miss followed by three consecutive RMC makes and an additional Saints misfire allowed the Battlin' Bears to seize the victory 6-5.
It's a tough ending to an otherwise sterling season. The Saints started 0-4 before climbing the CCC standings to earn a share of the regular season title.
Carroll had previously defeated longtime rival Rocky in the regular season, earning a 2-1 decision in Billings. But, in the postseason, the Battlin' Bears were able to prevail by the narrowest of margins.
