HELENA, Mont. -- A matchup with the No. 13 team in the NAIA means an opportunity for the Saints.
The Carroll College men's soccer team (4-4-0, 3-3-0) hits the road for a pair of big games this weekend.
"Upsets happen all the time," Saints coach
Doug Mello said. "Why not us? We're working hard. We're a good club."
First up, the Saints travel to No. 13 Rocky Mountain College (8-2-0, 4-1-0) for a Friday night game under the lights. The Battlin' Bears have allowed only five goals in 10 games this season. They're ranked No. 4 in the NAIA in shutouts per game (0.7) and in total shutouts (seven).Â
Offensively, the Battlin' Bears put 11.2 shots on goal per game, a number that is good for No. 5 in the NAIA.Â
"They're probably the most physical team in the conference," Mello said of Rocky. "You have to be ready for a nice hard hit."
The Saints bring a potent offense into Billings. Carroll is ranked No. 6 in the NAIA in shots per game, firing up 21 each contest. But, as Mello points out, the key for the Saints is finishing more of those opportunities.Â
"Our defense overall has been pretty steady," Mello said. "We've created numerous chances where we haven't capitalized and that's been our problem. Instead of missing shots by two inches, we have to finish, then you'll see a marked improvement."Â
Senior forward
Jose Porras leads the Saints attack so far. The senior is No. 10 in the NAIA in game winning goals per game with .38.Â
After the Friday night matchup (kickoff at 5 p.m.), the Saints head to Caldwell, Idaho, to face the College of Idaho. COI enters the game with its first conference win under its belt after the Yotes defeated Wala Walla 5-1 on Sept. 30.Â
Carroll and COI kickoff at noon on Sunday.Â
