Carroll College men's basketball surges to defeat EOU 98-89

Box Score HELENA, Mont. -- In a game that felt more like a mid-season brawl than early season prep, the Carroll College Saints men's basketball team dug deep and found a formula to defeat Eastern Oregon, 98-89 on Monday night in the PE Center.

Eastern Oregon, coached by former Saints assistant Carlito Labarda Jr., gave the Saints fits in the first half, beating the Saints to rebounds, turning the Saints over and drilling uncanny three-pointers.

The second half, the Saints flipped the script.

"Our guy's changed the tempo," Saints coach Kurt Paulson said. "We got the momentum. We got the lead and then our guys made free throws to hold them off."

EOU guard Jordan May put on a shooting-clinic in the first half, hitting a barrage of three-pointers and keeping the Saints at bay.

The second half, though, belonged to the Saints, who's tenacious full-court pressure slowed down the Mountaineers.

"We started putting the press on them and that's when the game changed," Paulson said.

Senior guard Matt Wyman, who's played a load of his minutes at power forward, scored 31 points just three nights after scoring his career high of 32 against Lethbridge.

Match Burnham saw his first action of the season and made the most of it. The senior scored 21 points, including a perfect 10-for-10 night at the free throw line.

Dane Warp continued his scoring tear, too, finishing with 19 points on 7-of-11 shooting, displaying a dominance in the open court that EOU couldn't contain before fouling out.

Seven Saints scored , as the team shot 51 percent from the field, 41 percent from three and 87 percent from the foul line.

A contingent of Saints fans were excited to see Labarda Jr. back in the PE Center, and his Mountaineers gave the Saints a tough game.

"He had them ready," Paulson said of Labarda Jr. "They had a nice high-low package for us. They were ready."

EOU's May led all scorers with 37 points.

The Saints are off until Nov. 1 when they travel to Butte to take on Warner Pacific and Dickinson State.
