Carroll men's soccer fights back to draw Providence, 1-1

HELENA, Mont. -- The Carroll College men's soccer team salvaged a 1-1 draw against the University of Providence on Monday in Great Falls.

"It was a good tie because we came back to get the tie," Saints coach Doug Mello said.

The Saints (5-5-1, 4-4-1) needed more heroics from leading goal scorer Javi Porras to knot the game up.

The Argonauts took the lead after a few errant passes from the Saints' defense paved the way for an easy breakaway. After the lapse, the Saints' defense tightened up and Carroll took command of the ball.

"We found our footing in the second half," Mello said. "They really couldn't get out of our end a whole lot."

Porras' goal came in the 66th minute, his eighth of the season. After a brilliant cross by Paolo Georgiades, Porras' one-timed the ball and gave the Saints an equalizer.

Freshman goalkeeper Kaden Connor had a relatively short day of work in goal, making one save.

Mello saw a break out performance from Santiago Morazzani, who subbed in to give the Saints a boost in energy.

"Santi, our guy from Argentina, had a breakout game," Mello said. "He was all over the pitch. He was winning head balls and defending well. We were happy to see that."

The Saints outshot the Argonauts 18-8, including 12-2 on target.

The Saints' defense limited Providence's opportunities.

"Defensively, Kyle Thomsen and Leo Georgiades had stellar performances corralling their dangerous forwards," Mello said. "I think we fought hard. We'll take that into the weekend coming."

The Saints once again hit the road this weekend. They face Northwest University and The Evergreen State College.
