HELENA, Mont. - The No. 10 Carroll College women's basketball team could not find an offensive rhythm and fell to No. 18 Rocky Mountain 58-50 Saturday evening at the PE Center in Helena.
The Saints and Battlin' Bears battled to a 10-10 tie with 4:33 left in the first quarter before Carroll rattled off an 8-2 run the take an 18-12 lead after one.
The Bears stepped up the defensive pressure in the second quarter, holding Carroll to nine points, but the Saints held on to a 27-24 advantage at the break.
The third quarter followed the same trend with Carroll only scoring eight points. Rocky took the lead with 6:36 to play in the third and never relinquished it. The Bears led 40-35 after three.
Carroll cut the lead to one twice in the final frame, but every run was answered by the Bears. Rocky went 6-6 from the free throw line in the final minute to earn the eight-point win.
The Saints were 18-53 (34.0 percent) from the field and 6-24 (24.0 percent) from the three-point line.
Jaidyn Lyman scored nine points to lead the Saints. Three other Carroll players scored eight and nine players scored.
Hannah Dean had a team-high 10 rebounds.
Markaela Francis scored a game-high 16 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to lead the Rocky.
The win drops Carroll into a three-way tie for the top spot in the league at 7-3 with Rocky and Providence.
The Saints next host Providence at the PE Center on Feb. 1 at 5:30 p.m.
