BUTTE, Mont. – Four Saints scored in double figures to lead the 24th-ranked Carroll College women's basketball team to a 63-55 win over Montana Tech on the road in Butte Thursday evening.
The game was a battle from the opening tipoff. The Saints scored first, but the Orediggers battled back and controlled the lead for most of the First quarter. They built a 15-10 lead before Carroll cut the advantage to 17-16 at the end of the quarter.
Tech again built a lead in the second, going ahead 25-21 with 5:13 left before the Saints closed on a 9-2 run, including a three-pointer at the buzzer from
Jaidyn Lyman to put Carroll up 30-27 at the half.
Carroll built a 38-29 lead early in the third quarter, but Montana Tech responded and took a 44-42 lead in the final minute of the third. Carroll tied the game at 44 at the end of the third with a jumper from
Danielle Wagner.
The Saints never trailed in the fourth quarter and built a nine-point lead en route to a 63-55 win.
The win closes out the first of three legs of the Frontier Conference season for the Saints. Carroll is now 13-4 on the year, and 5-1 in Frontier play and sits atop the league standings.
The game was the fourth in eight days for Carroll, the only such stretch for the Saints in conference play.
"I'm super proud of this team," head coach
Rachelle Sayers said. "In our fourth game in eight days, playing at on the road against a very good and rested Tech team, I wasn't sure if we would have enough gas in the tank, but these guys are resilient and are playing with such confidence. I couldn't be prouder of them. They are so fun to coach, and I feel like we still are getting better."
The Saints were 23-56 (41.1 percent) from the field and 5-12 (41.7 percent) from the three-point line.
Bailey Pasta led the way with 14 points,
Michaela Dowdy continued her strong play with 12 points and eight rebounds.
Hannah Dean and
Danielle Wagner added 10 points each, Wagner also had eight rebounds.
The Saints held Tech to 19-50 (38.0 percent) from the field, but the Diggers were an efficient 6-13 (46.2 percent) from the three-point line.
Carroll outrebounded Tech 36-32 and forced 18 turnovers while only giving up 12.
The Saints now get a well-deserved long weekend before getting back on the road to games at Montana Western a week from tonight and Lewis-Clark State next Saturday.
