Carroll Women's Soccer Falls to No. 17 Hastings 2-0

BOISE, Idaho – The Carroll College women's soccer team didn't allow No. 17 Hastings to score a single goal over the last 79 minutes of their neutral site match Sunday in Caldwell, Idaho. Unfortunately for the Saints, Hastings scored goals in the second and 10th minute of the match and shut out the Saints for a 2-0 win.

"We had a lot of pregame jitters," head coach David Thorvilson said. "We weren't quite ready to play our first game of the year. Once we settled down, it became a much better game.  We have a team without a lot experience after what we graduated last year, and you could see it before the game."

Hastings scored in the early after a foul in the box allowed Heidi Bartsch a penalty kick opportunity. She capitalized and put the Broncos up 1-0.

In the 10th minute, Hastings' Heidi Bartsch sent a long through ball to Emily Weyant who scored to go up 2-0.

The rest of the match was a draw. Both teams had chances. Hastings outshot Carroll 7-6 but had five shots on goal to just two for the Saints.

Freshman Brynn Walker played well in her debut, and senior Emily Spindler also played well for the Saints, limiting shots on the back end.

"We had a lot of great chances in the second half," Thorvilson said. "We got some good play out of Emily Spindler; she played all 90 minutes. Brynn Walker had two very good looks that she missed just wide in the second half. All in all, there was a lot of nervous energy that I hope we overcome in the next game."

The Saints close out the weekend with a game at 4 p.m. Monday against Northwest Nazarene. Live stats are available via the NNU Stretch Internet Page.
