PORTLAND, Ore. – Rodrigo Portillo scored a game-winning goal in the 81st minute to lift Carroll College to a 2-1 win over Multnomah to move to 4-1 on the season, and 2-0 in Cascade Conference play.
Carroll outshot the Lions 15-7 in the first half but was unable to capitalize on the attacks, and the game went into the half tied at 0-0.
In the 60th minute, the Lions got on the board first with a goal by Nicolas Mboungou. The one goal lead wouldn't last long.
The Saints equalized on a 70th minute a goal from
Jose Porras on an assist from
Nick Lowrimore. Lowrimore crossed into the box, and Porras finished in traffic.
"I am excited for Javi (Porras), it is his birthday and what is better for a birthday than a goal and a win," head coach
Doug Mello said.
Carroll continued to pressure the goal, racking up 13 shots in the second half until Portillo got the goal on another assist from Lowrimore.
Lowrimore sent the through ball past two defenders, and Rodrigo smashed the ball with his right foot into the goal for the 2-1 lead.
The lead was late, but it was anything but certain. In the final minute, Multnomah's Zack Woods broke away for one more shot at the goal, but
Dominique Beauboeuf made his final of five saves to clinch the wins for the Saints.
"We are thrilled to get the three points in the conference standings and stay undefeated in conference," Mellos said. "We missed a lot of chances. We couldn't put them home, but we are 4-1, and we are at the top of the league."
Carroll hosts conference favorite Corban on Friday, Sept. 22 at Nelson Stadium in the fire home conference match of the year for the Saints.
