Apsey's Lone Goal Lifts Carroll Women's Soccer to 1-0 Win

SPOKANE – Madison Apsey scored a lone goal in the 21st minute, and the Carroll College women's soccer team defeated NAIA DIII opponent Whitworth Sunday on the road in Spokane.

The match was tightly contested. The Saints had six shots in the first half to four for Whitworth, but the Pirates flipped the stat in the second, notching six to just three for Carroll. The Saints did notch six shots on goal to just three for Whitworth.

Apsey's lone goal was impressive. The ball was played into Apsey, and after she took a pair of dribbles, she rocketed the ball from 25-yards out, far post into the goal.

"The keeper was out of position and she struck the ball hard to the lower left corner far post," head coach David Thorvilson said. "She hit the ball hard, and there are not a lot of goalkeepers that could have made that save."

Devan Murfitt notched her second-consecutive shutout. She had three saves in the contest. The back line has shown improvement in just the first few weeks of the season.

"Devan had a little more work to do today, and she made some really good saves," Thorvilson said. "We are still a very young defense and to come out of a weekend with back-to-back shutouts on the road."

The Saints close out the non-conference season with a pair of home non-conference games, beginning with MSU Billings Thursday at Nelson Stadium.
