Box Score 2 La CROSSE, Wis. – The 23rd ranked Carroll College volleyball team upset No. 4 Midland (Neb.) in 25-20, 25-23, 24-26, 18-25, 15-13 before falling to No. 10 Grand View (Iowa) 25-23, 23-25, 23-25, 25-21, 15-8.
After today's split, the Saints are now 2-1 on the year, and a meeting with tournament host and No. 6 Viterbo is scheduled for 11 a.m. tomorrow.
The Saints appeared to be in complete control, winning the first set 25-20 and the second 25-23 before Midland battled back in the third set.
"Looking back at the first match, we won the first two games, and then in the third set, we got complacent," Boyle said. "Really, we could have finished it there. We gave up the first seven points of the set and were battling the rest of the way but made too many mistakes down the stretch."
After dropping the fourth set, the Saints rallied and won the match in the fifth to move to 2-0 on the year.
"I've got to give Mallory Arbizzani and Brielle Bumgarner did a great job in the middle for us," Boyle said.
"Rayna Pilgeram did a great job running the offense. Holly Morehouse did a great job in that first set. We didn't feel out of it, even when we were down. They showed a lot of grit, and I am excited about their stamina."
Bumgarner led the Saints with 14 kills, Morehouse added 12 and Arbizzani tallied eight. The Saints tallied 13 team blocks with Bumgarner picking up eight. Pilgeram tallied 41 assists, and Casey Berry had 23 digs.
The second match both teams battled back and forth splitting the first four sets with a score difference of just two points. The Saints dropped the first set before Carroll won the second and third sets. The fourth set was tied at 21 before Grand View scored the final four points to tie the match at two sets a piece.
The fatigue of two consecutive matches showed in the final set as Grand View won 15-8.
"I'm not so sure that it was the legs but mentally, we just had a letdown," Boyle said. "I would rather have that match now than a month from now. I think they realized that they are better than they think they are. Mentally it is a battle for us, and we are better than we were this morning."
Casey McInerney led the Saints with 12 kills and Pilgeram added eight and 37 assists. Casey Berry tallied 20 digs and Ayla Carpenter had 18. The Saints had nine blocks as a team and Arbizzani notched three solo blocks and three block assists.
Despite the split, the Saints played two very quality opponents, and Boyle believes they achieved what they traveled to Wisconsin to accomplish.
"I believe that we got our money's worth today," Boyle said. "It takes a toll on our budget to fly out here. If today was it, it was worth it for us. We learned a lot about ourselves, about our ability, where we can go as a team. We have a lot of room to improve, but there were a lot of great things out there."
The Saints play their final match of the weekend Saturday at 10 a.m. mountain time against Viterbo. Live video will be available via the Viterbo Athletics video stream.
