HELENA, Mont. – The 21st-ranked Carroll College women's basketball closed out the non-conference season with an 82-61 win over the University of Lethbridge.
Hannah Dean led the way with 21 points and 10 rebounds and Michaela Dowdy and Taylor Salonen added 13 each for the Saints.
The first quarter was a back and forth battle with neither team built a lead more than five points. The Saints carried a 19-18 lead into the second.
Lethbridge built a 25-21 lead with 7:50 left in the second quarter before the Saints went on a 5-0 run to take a 26-25 lead and built a 38-34 advantage at the break.
Carroll exploded in the third quarter, outscoring Lethbridge 18-4 to take a 46-38 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Dean scored six straight points for the Saints to start the fourth quarter and Carroll kept the Pronghorns at arm's length the rest of the way to cruise to an 82-61 win.
Carroll was 30-63 (47.6 percent) from the field and had 17 assists for the game. Dean's 21 came on 7-12 shooting and 7-8 from the free throw line where the Saints were 15-17 (88.2 percent). The Saints also outrebounded Lethbridge 36-25.
Freshman point guard Jaidyn Lyman just missed out on double figures with nine points but put up some big numbers across the board with a game-high five assists and three steals with one turnover.
"I think the biggest thing was we were a little tired from last night. We didn't go as deep into the bench.," head coach
Rachelle Sayers said. "We have a good bench. We have a lot of players that can come in and contribute and tonight, they did that. Taylor had a great game. Jaidyn Lyman played her best game for us. She controlled the tempo and made the right read and got the ball to the right people. That's huge for us in that position. She adds a different dimension to our team. Hannah Dean took control of that game when we really needed somebody to take control and Dowdy had another solid performance."
Lethbridge's Danielle Fritzke led the Pronghorns with 12 points Kathryn Hankins added 10. Lethbridge was 21-48 (43.8 percent) from the field and 7-27 (25.9 percent) from the three-point line.
The Saints enter the bulk of Frontier play next week and enter with a 10-4 record, including a split in the Frontier Conference games from early December. Carroll has won four of their last five with the only loss coming by three points at the hands of NAIA DII No. 1 Saint Xavier.
The Saints begin Frontier Conference play with 12th-ranked Montana Western Thursday at the PE Center.
