HELENA, Mont. – Carroll College women's basketball head coach
Rachelle Sayers earned the 100th win of her career Friday night in dramatic fashion. The Saints needed overtime to get it done but led by
Cassidy Hashley's career-high 31 points, Carroll topped No. 13 University of Great Falls 64-60.
"It was more exciting to win that game," Sayers said. "That was brutal. Great Falls just makes you work every single possession. I thought our kids did a great job. One hundred wins is exciting. Unfortunately, we're going back to work in about 20 minutes getting ready for Northern. It's fun. It's great for our kids."
The Saints controlled most of the first half before going cold right before halftime. The Saints led 31-16 with 5:10 to play in the half but didn't score for the remainder of the half. UGF cut the lead to 31-20 at the break.
The drought continued after the break and UGF cut the lead to 31-26 with 6:59 left in the third before Carroll rattled off six-straight to regain an 11-point lead.
The Argos cut the deficit to 43-36 at the quarter break and took a 50-49 lead with 3:31 remaining in the game.
The Saints regained the lead but a Nneka Nnadi three-point play in the final minute tied the game at 55.
Bailey Pasta appeared to give Carroll the win in the final second with runner that went in but was called off. Pasta was called for an offensive foul and the game went into overtime.
Pasta bounced right back and hit a bucket in the the first minute of OT to give the Saints a 57-55 lead. They wouldn't trail again.
Carroll built a 61-55 lead before UGF responded ad cut the lead to 61-60 with 58 seconds remaining in overtime.
Cassidy Hashley capped her career night at the line, hitting 3-of-4 in the final 22 seconds.
Pasta had 11 points as the only other Saint in double figures.
Hannah Dean only tallied three points on the game but notched eight assists. The Saints were 23-55 (41.8 percent) from the field and 15-21 (71.4 percent) from the line.
Stephanie McDonagh led the Argos with 17 points and a team-high eight rebounds. Nnadi had 12 points for UGF. The Argos were 23-65 (35.4 percent) from the field. UGF outrebounded the Saints 39-38.
The win propels the Saints to 12-3 on the season and 2-1 in Frontier Conference play.
Sayers is now 100-62 (61.7 percent) in her fifth season at the helm for the Saints.
UGF, the No. 16 team in the country for blocked shots, did not record a single block on the game while the Saints had three.
Carroll doesn't have time to enjoy this win. Another top-15 team comes to the PE Center tomorrow in No. 11 MSU-Northern. The Saints and Skylights are scheduled to tip off at 5:30 p.m.
