HELENA, Mont. – The Carroll College men's soccer is back in action against 3-3 College of Idaho Friday in Caldwell and 5-2 and 24th-ranked Rocky Mountain Sunday in Billings.
Carroll is 4-5 on the season, the Saints went 1-1 last weekend falling to Eastern Oregon 1-0 before responding with a 2-0 win over the Warner Pacific.
"The game against Eastern could have gone either way," head coach
Doug Mello said. "But against Warner, I changed the lineup around to get everyone's attention and it worked. We had great performances from the front to goalkeepers and I hope that our mind is right as we go into a tough weekend."
The Saints are still without
Alessio Georgiades, who has yet to play this season but looks to get back into action in the coming weeks. Also not making the trip is midfielder
Jose Mena who is also out with an injury.
"We have a deep team, that even though we've had injuries. We have been able to carry on," Mello said. "We hope to catapult off of the Warner game and perform well on the road against tough competition."
The Saints begin with the Yotes who are coming off of back-to-back wins last weekend. Guilherme Sequeira leads the yotes with seven goals and two assists. Grant Billings has started every game for C of I in goal. He has three shutouts on the year.
"Traditionally, College of Idaho is a hard-working group," Mello said. "They are usually in the top third of the conference and they are coming off of two big wins so they will look to get some momentum going."
Sunday the Saints take on Conference favorite Rocky Mountain, the Bears are 5-2 and 3-0 in Cascade action.
RMC is led Nolan Sherwood who has seven goals on the season. Carroll hopes to get over the hump and earn a win over the Bears, a team they have never beat in five attempts.
"Rocky has been our nemesis. We've come close but we haven't knocked them off," Mello said. "They always bring their A-game at home. We are going to have to be ready for a physical battle. We need to play through the physicality and bring style and steel into the match."
The goal for both matches is to make the opponents earn any shot attempt they get. Carroll has given up early goals in several matches this year, including the 1-0 loss to Eastern Oregon and the Mello knows that early goals change the temp of matches.
"For us, it is going to be big not to give up an early goal, which has haunted us so far this season," Mello said. "We need to continue to create chances and capitalize on those. If we play hard and keep them out of goal early, we should get a result we want."
The Saints take on College of Idaho at 2 p.m. Friday and Rocky at 1 p.m. Sunday. The College of Idaho Game will have
live video and stats and the Rocky game will have
live video.
