BILLINGS, Mont. – The No. 22 Carroll College Saints football team fell 21-20 to Rocky Mountain at Herb Kindt Field in Billings Saturday in the first road game of the season for the Saints.
Carroll scored all 20 points in the first half but didn't score in the second half as the Battlin' Bears took the lead with just under five minutes to play in the fourth quarter.
The Saints opened the scoring with a 25-yard touchdown run by
Ryan Walsh. The PAT was blocked by Rocky's Zane Guse.
In the second quarter, an interception by
Ryan Gregory set up a touchdown from
JT Linder to
Connor McGree with 3:57 left in the first half.
The Bears got on the board on their next possession with a touchdown from Chase White to Ricky Carrigan to cut the Carroll lead to 13-7, with 2:02 left in the half.
Carroll responded with a touchdown drive that culminated in a 16-yard touchdown pass from Linder to
Eric Dawson to put the Saints up 20-7 with just 20 second left in the first half. The Bears kneeled on the ball to head into the break.
The second half was won in all three phases by the Bears.
Rocky opened the scoring with a 55-yard touchdown from White to Jayc Van Zee with 12:49 left in the third quarter.
The two defenses then held stout but the special teams hurt the Saints. Rocky blocked two Carroll punts, including one to set up the go-ahead score. White found Carrigan in the endzone with 4:57 left in the game, the PAT rang true to put the Bears ahead.
Carroll's ensuing drive was interrupted with an interception by Rocky's Jason Baker. Carroll forced a three-and-out and had a Hail Mary attempt at the final gun but the pass was knocked away and the Bears earned the win.
Linder was 21-of-36 for 180 yards, two touchdowns and an interception.
Ryan Walsh had 14 attempts for 58 yards rushing and a touchdown and
Major Ali had eight carries for 55 yards to lead the rushing attack.
Kyle Griffith tallied five catches for 66 yards,
Connor Fohn had five catches for 48 yards,
Eric Dawson has two catches for 25 yards and a touchdown and
Connor McGree had one catch for four yards and a touchdown to lead Carroll receivers.
The Saints tallied four sacks and two interceptions.
Carroll is back in action next Saturday against MSU-Northern in Havre.
