Saints Softball Tops No. 17 Corban to go 3-1 on the Weekend

Kennewick, Wash. - Carroll softball finished 3-1 at the two-day CCC Crossover tournament in central Washington's Tri-Cities, including a win over No. 17 Corban Sunday afternoon to move to 9-5 on the season.
 
The Saints split the first day action Saturday, with a 10-1 loss to corban before their bats came alive in a 15-8 win over Northwest Christian.
 
Sunday, the Carroll battled their way to a 6-3 win over NWC before earning the 7-5 win over Corban I their first win over a ranked opponent this season.
 
Day One
In the first game of the tournament, the Saints fell behind early to the Warriors after giving up three runs on four hits in the first inning.  After adding another run in the second, Corban scored two more runs in the fourth inning off of an RBI double.
 
The Warriors would strike again in the fifth inning with four more runs to increase the lead to 10-0 after five.  The Saints lone run came in the bottom of the fifth off of a throwing error by the catcher that allowed Taylor Otswald to score.
 
Megan Gipe pitched all five innings for the Saints, giving up six earned runs on 10 hits while striking out three.
 
"We can learn from our mistakes and get better," said head coach Aaron Jackson. 
 
Carroll struggled at the start of their second game against Northwest Christian giving up seven runs in the third inning. 
 
The Saints responded in the bottom half of the third and capitalized on errors by the Beacons to score Destry McNellis on a throwing error. Jaylin Kenney scored on a RBI single by Allison Bayer cutting the lead to 7-2.
 
Carroll added three runs in the fourth inning after a RBI fielder's choice by McNellis that scored Brittany Smith.  Kaydee Parsons drove in Jadeen Sakauye on a sacrifice fly before the next batter, Kenney, batted in McNellis after a throwing error to cut the Beacons lead to 7-5.
 
In the fifth inning, Brittany Hogan scored on a throwing error and Smith's RBI single scored Justine Taylor to tie the game at 7.  Later in the inning, Parsons' two RBI single gave the Saints the 9-7 lead.
 
Northwest Christian added one more run in the top of the sixth inning before Carroll sealed up the win with a six run sixth inning.  Smith, Sakauye, Parsons, and Kenney all had RBI singles to spark the inning.  Gipe drove in two after a fielding error by the Beacons scoring Parsons and McNellis and securing the 15-8 victory.
 
Tess Eaton started the game for the Saints, going two and a third innings, giving up seven runs on six hits.  Landis came in on relief and picked up her third win of the season after throwing two and two thirds innings, giving up no runs and striking out three.  Gipe finished the final two innings while giving up one run on one hit.
 
Bayer went 3-5 with an RBI in the game.  Smith was 3-4 with two RBIs and three runs on the day.  Sakauye and Parsons both were 2-4 with two runs and four runs scored respectively. 
 
"We could have laid down and died." Jackson said.  "The girls fought back and showed great resilience."
 
Day Two
In the game of Sunday's action, Northwest Christian took an early lead in the first game after scoring three runs in the first inning. 
 
The Saints responded quickly with two runs in the top of the second on RBI singles from Parsons and Kenney.
 
Bayer led off the third inning with a triple and later scored on an error by the catcher.  Ashley Davis' RBI double later in the inning scored Hogan.  The Saints added another run after another throwing error by the catcher allowed Davis to score.  Carroll led 5-2 after three innings.
 
Gipe tripled in the sixth inning to drive in Paige Blake and secure the 6-3 victory.
 
Gipe pitched a complete game allowing three runs on five hits while striking out four.  Kenney went 3-4 with a RBI in the game at the lead-off spot.  Davis and Parsons both had two hits during the game with a RBI each.
 
"We battled back and refused to quit." said head coach Aaron Jackson. "It was a tough game for us but we took care of business."
 
In the final game of the tournament, Carroll took an early lead after Otswald scored on a fielding error in the second inning.
 
The Saints added two more runs in the fourth inning after Smith and Taylor scored on errors by the Warriors. 
 
Carroll took a 5-0 lead after the fifth inning when Bayer scored on a throwing error and Otswald's sacrifice fly drove in Tianna Harper.
 
Corban chipped away at the lead, scoring one run in the bottom of the fifth and three more in the sixth inning.  Carroll led 5-4 going into the seventh and final inning.
 
Harper's two-RBI double scored Bayer and Blake sealed up the 7-5 win over Corban.
 
Landis started the game for the Saints, going five and two thirds innings, giving up four runs on nine hits.  Landis picked up the win and improved to 4-0 on the season.  Davis came in to close the game out, going one and one third innings and giving up one run.  She picked up her first save of the season.
 
Harper went 2-4 during the second game with three RBIs and one run scored.  Otswald went 2-3 with one RBI and run.
 
"We won a big game against a top-25 team that is very good." Jackson said.  "Tianna (Harper) came up big for us and Davis closed the door."
 
Carroll improved to 9-5 on the season and will travel to Concordia University in Oregon for a doubleheader on Tuesday.  The NCAA DII Cavaliers are 12-7 on the season and games will begin at 2 p.m. MST.
