Carroll softball drops two against Southern Oregon

HELENA, Mont. – Carroll softball was swept by Southern Oregon in their home opener 4-2, 5-3 in tightly contested match ups at Centennial Park in Helena.
 
In the first game, Carroll scored first in the second inning after a Justine Taylor RBI single to the pitcher's mound, scoring Megan GipeCourtney Cloud scored after Taylor stole second and the ball got away from the second baseman, giving Carroll a 2-0 lead.
 
Gipe had a no-hitter going into the fourth inning before giving up a single to Kayleen Smith.  The Raiders took the lead after scoring three runs on three hits during the inning.  Southern Oregon led 3-2 after four. 
 
Raiders added another run in the top of the seventh inning after a RBI single by Kelsey Randall to increase the lead to 4-2.
 
The Saints got the tying the run on base in the seventh inning after Taylor singled to center and Jaylin Kenney reached on a misplayed grounder. 
 
Madison Soper pinch hit for Paige Blake with the Saints down to their final out.  Soper hit a hard groundball back up the middle but pitcher Sydney White was able to get her glove on the ball and complete the play to win the game 4-2 for Southern Oregon.
 
Taylor led the Saints with two hits and a RBI.  Gipe went 1-3 at the plate with a run scored.  She went all seven innings for the Saints, giving up four runs on six hits and striking out three.
 
In the second game, Southern Oregon took an early lead in the first inning after scoring four runs on five hits including a RBI single and two RBI doubles.  The Raiders led 4-0 after the first inning.
 
The Saints closed the lead in the fourth inning after two runs scored on a Jaydee Parsons' double.  Ashley Davis singled home Taylor Ostwald in the next a bat to cut the score to 4-3.
 
Southern Oregon answered in the top of the fifth inning with a two out single to push the score to 5-3 and ultimately the victory.
 
Kenney was 2-4 on the day while Parsons finished 3-3 with a run and a RBI.  MacKenna Landis threw a complete game while giving up 13 hits and four earned runs. 
 
The Saints will host 3rd-ranked Oregon Tech at 11 a.m. on Sunday at Centennial Park.  Oregon Tech is 7-10 on the season after defeating University of Great Falls (7-5) (7-3) on Saturday.  Live stats can be found here and video here.
